Image

Spider-Man reaches another milestone this month with Amazing Spider-Man #850, from writer Nick Spencer and an all-star lineup of artists including Ryan Ottley, Humberto Ramos, and Mark Bagley.

The monumental issue will feature the return of Spider-Man’s greatest villain, the Green Goblin. One never knows what to expect when this maniacal mastermind shows up in Peter Parker’s life, and in their latest showdown, amidst the Sin-Eater’s reign of terror, there are bound to be some surprises.

“In the spirit of Amazing Spider-Man milestone issues past, we are giving you an issue you will not forget,” promises Editor Nick Lowe. “Amazing Spider-Man #50 gave you ‘Spider-Man No More’, #300 gave you Venom, #700 gave you Superior Spider-Man and #800 gave you the Red Goblin.”

“Nick Spencer and our legendary Amazing Spider-Man artists Ryan Ottley, Humberto Ramos & Mark Bagley bring back the Green Goblin for a brutal story that tops them all! And as if THAT giant-sized story wasn’t enough, we have a trio of stories by Spidey legends of past, present and future to drive home that Spider-Man is the greatest character in all of fiction!”

Those back-up tales are by all-star talents like Kurt Busiek, Chris Bachalo, Tradd Moore, Saladin Ahmed, and Aaron Kuder, so this should be well worth picking up come September 30th.

ETERNALS Director Chloe Zhao And Kevin Feige On Topping AVENGERS: ENDGAME And Including A LGBTQ relationship

Image

The Hollywood Reporter has a great new profile up on Eternals director Chloe Zhao with comments from both the filmmaker and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. He describes Zhao’s pitch as “fascinating,” and reveals that “frankly one of the reasons we moved forward on the movie was because of the vision that she brought to it.”

The director would go on to explain that, “I have such deep, strong, manga roots. I brought some of that into Eternals. And I look forward to pushing more of that marriage of East and West.” Zhao also had big ambitions for her Marvel movie. “How much further and bigger can we go after [Avengers:] Endgame? Because I’m not just making the film as a director. I’m making the film as a fan.”

Despite some filmmakers clashing with Marvel Studios in the past, Zhao tells the trade she got to film Eternals exactly the way she wanted, and credits Feige and company for wanting to take risks and do something different. That obviously include the MCU’s first LGBTQ relationship.

That “was always sort of inherent in the story and the makeup of the different types of Eternals,” according to Feige. “I think it is extremely well done, and I look forward to that level of inclusion in our future movies being less of a topic.” The movie also boasts a diverse cast, and that was important to Zhao for a number of reasons when she decided to tackle this story.

“I wanted it to reflect the world we live in,” she says. “But also I wanted to put a cast together that feels like a group of misfits. I didn’t want the jocks. I want you to walk away at the end of the movie not thinking, ‘This person is this ethnicity, that person is that nationality.’ No. I want you to walk away thinking, ‘That’s a family.’ You don’t think about what they represent. You see them as individuals.”

With Eternals delayed to 2021, the hope is that we’ll get to see a trailer before the end of the year.

SUPERMAN & LOIS: New CWVerse Superheroes Highlight Reel Teases Clark Kent’s Return To Smallville

Image

While it’s not entirely clear when filming will be able to resume on the first season of Superman & Lois, The CW has now released a new CWVerse Superheroes highlight reel, spotlighting all of their live-action DC shows and offering a small tease of what’s to come when Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) returns to Smallville.

There really isn’t anything in terms of footage, but we do get some new dialogue and potential theme music mixed in with recycled shots from Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch’s (Lois Lane) appearances during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and “Elseworlds” crossover events.

As for the rest of the reel, it covers ArrowThe Flash, DC’s Stargirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and Supergirl, but again, The CW doesn’t mention Green Arrow and the Canaries, which might be an early indicator that they may have opted not to move forward with the spinoff.

In SUPERMAN & LOIS, after years of facing megalomaniacal supervillains, monsters wreaking havoc on Metropolis, and alien invaders intent on wiping out the human race, the world’s most famous superhero, The Man of Steel aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin, “Teen Wolf”) and comic books’ most famous journalist, Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch, “Grimm”), come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever – dealing with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society. Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois must also concern themselves with whether or not their sons Jonathan (Jordan Elsass, “Little Fires Everywhere”) and Jordan (Alexander Garfin, “The Peanuts Movie”) could inherit their father’s Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older. Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui, “Entourage”), a local loan officer who also happens to be Clark’s first love, and her Fire Chief husband Kyle Cushing (Erik Valdez, “Graceland”). The adults aren’t the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle’s rebellious daughter, Sarah (Inde Navarrette, “Wander Darkly”). Of course, there’s never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois’ father, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh, “Nip/Tuck”) looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment’s notice. Meanwhile, Superman and Lois’ return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended when a mysterious stranger (Wolé Parks, “All American”) enters their lives. Based on the characters from DC created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, SUPERMAN & LOIS is written and executive produced by Todd Helbing (“The Flash”) and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns. The series is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

MARVEL’S AVENGERS Delays The Reveal Of BLACK PANTHER As A Future Playable Character

Image

Black Panther will be coming to Marvel’s Avengers as a post-launch content character, but his reveal will have to wait for at least a little while longer.

Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics had originally planned to reveal Black Panther as a playable character during today’s War Table livestream but decided to postpone the announcement out of respect for the late Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Crystal Dynamics revealed the character’s icon at the beginning of the stream and held a moment of silence in honor of Boseman, who passed away on Friday after quietly battling colon cancer for years. They followed it up with a message that read: “Marvel’s Avengers fans, out of respect for a fallen true hero, we have altered what we are showing today. We know you understand and are with us in commemorating him.”

In lieu of Black Panther, Crystal Dynamics instead revealed Kate Bishop as a future playable character.

In addition to T’Challa, recent data-mining of the PC beta files included references to Wakanda as well as Klaw. We know post-launch characters will come with their own story missions and villains, so it’s possible Black Panther’s story could take us to Wakanda. The files also referenced “Klaw Raid,” suggesting the game’s first raid could be set in the Wakanda region.

IMeanwhile, data-miners have discovered files for other Marvel characters, including Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Falcon, Mar-Vell, Quake, She-Hulk, Vision, War Machine, Wasp and more. This doesn’t necessarily mean that all of these will be playable characters, however, as they could just appear in the story. At launch, Marvel’s Avengers will feature six playable heroes: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Kamala Khan.

Marvel’s Avengers officially releases on September 4 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. However, early access to the game is now available to those who purchased a special edition version of the game.

Mark Millar’s NEMESIS Lands PROJECT POWER Directors, But Doesn’t Sound Overly Comic Accurate

Image

After directing Project Power for Netflix, directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman have signed up to take the helm of Nemesis for Warner Bros. according to Collider. Weirdly, the site doesn’t mention that this is an adaptation of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s comic book of the same name.

This could be because the project  is billed as a sci-fi action thriller, and the premise has little in common with the comic book.

In Millar’s story, Nemesis basically had all of Batman’s resources with The Joker’s personality, and went on a mission which saw him wreak havoc across the globe, matching wits with a police detective and committing a series of heinous crimes.

This movie, on the other hand, “is said to follow a genius engineer who witnesses the President of the United States commit a deadly crime and teams up with a vigilante to take down the President and his corrupt government.” That really doesn’t sound like the comic book!

Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) penned the most recent draft of the screenplay, following a previous version by Stephen Chin (War Dogs).

This is one of a number of different projects the duo is developing, but it’s a strange decision to take Nemesis and transform it into what sounds like a generic thriller, making the title character a regular vigilante in the process. That misses the point of what Millar and McNiven were going for, and it sounds like the writer has little to no involvement here.

BATMAN Concept Art From A “Canceled Project” Reveals An Apparent FLASHPOINT Take On The Dark Knight

Image

Concept artist Jerad S. Marantz has worked on a number of high-profile projects, including Avengers: Infinity War and Justice League. He frequently shares his artwork on social media, but this latest piece has definitely got fans talking as it’s from an undisclosed “canceled project.”

As you can see, the artwork shows a very unique take on Batman which definitely appears to have been inspired by the Flashpoint comic books.

It’s obviously hard not to wonder whether this design was meant for an earlier version of The Flash movie, as it’s no secret the Thomas Wayne version of Batman was once set to be part of the plot. There are any number of possibilities, however, so that’s purely speculation for the time being.

There are currently two confirmed versions of the Dark Knight set for The Flash, with Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton both reprising their roles. Is it too much to hope that Jeffrey Dean Morgan joins them, reprising his role from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice?
