Marvel Comics is giving the Fantastic Four an overhaul for the team’s upcoming issue #25, which is being billed as a “new era” for Marvel’s First Family. Former Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott is remaining on board as the title’s writer, but he’s going to be joined by Powers of X artist RB Silva. 

Since returning to the Marvel Universe, the heroes have worn black uniforms with blue accents, but these new costumes – which are showcased on a cover by Mark Brooks – are far more traditional. 

The solicitation text for Fantastic Four #25 promises that, “This issue has it all: New artist! New villains! New uniforms! And a new, major, permanent status quo change for Marvel’s First Family! All this and an appearance by DOCTOR DOOM! One of the most important characters in the entire cosmos…returns from the dead! And a major turning point in the history of the FANTASTIC FOUR! Great entry point for readers!”

Looking at the cover, it appears as if Empyre: Fantastic Four #0‘s young Kree Jo-Venn and young Skrull N’Kalla will be joining the team on their adventures once that crossover reaches its conclusion.

Slott’s Fantastic Four run has drawn mixed reviews, but he’s done an effective job of reimagining the team after they were shelved by Marvel Comics. Plus, for many comic book readers out there, it will just be a treat to see Reed, Sue, Johnny, and Ben back in their classic comic book costumes.

It’s been known for some time now that The Flash movie will borrow a number of story elements from the Flashpoint comic book, though one major change has already been made. That’s the decision to have Barry Allen arrive in a new timeline where Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne is still Batman (replacing the Thomas Wayne version of the vigilante from the source material). 

If a new rumor shared by Heroic Hollywood is to be believed, there won’t be a war between the Atlanteans and Amazons, either. That points to a very different take on this story, and potentially debunks previous reports of cameos from Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

As well as meeting a different version of Batman in the alternate timeline he creates after racing back in time to save his mother from the Reverse-Flash, the comic book Flashpoint revealed that Earth had been ravaged by a war between the two Justice League members and their respective nations.

That might have been a little too much for The Flash to include, but a lot of fans out there are sure to be disappointed that another major part of the source material will not be featured in this film. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be excited, however, and more details will hopefully be revealed soon.

One of the most talked about franchises in Hollywood at the moment is X-Men. With Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind us and veteran actors Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Evans saying goodbye, many actors are stepping up to make their interest in the franchise known, hoping to become involved with the massive IP.

We recently spoke with Dante Basco who is known for voicing Prince Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender and his portrayal of Rufio alongside Robin Williams in Stevn Spielberg’s Hook in order to help promote his involvement in Twitch’s interactive and scripted sci-fi series Artificial: Remote Intelligence. Of course it wouldn’t be an episode of the Inner Child Podcast if we didn’t get in touch with our guests inner child, so we asked Basco what roles he’d like to play in DC and Marvel, respectively.

Having spoken with Dante back in July we were already savvy to his want to play Robin, the Boy Wonder, so we shifted our focus to Marvel this time around. We learned that Basco is extremely interested in being a part of the MCU’s iteration of the X-Men, and he even mentioned that he’d like to play Nightcrawler!

Joe: Thanks for speaking with me again so soon! I had the pleasure of breaking the announcement for your involvement with Twitch’s Artificial, which is exciting!

Dante Basco: Of course, man, it’s awesome, thanks for having me.

Joe: I know we spoke a bit before in the past and I remember you had mentioned that you’d really like to play Robin, the Boy Wonder.

Dante Basco: Yeah, definitely!

Joe: Well, I was wondering what other dream roles you have?

Dante Basco: You know I’d love to voice or act in X-Men. Being a person of color growing up, the stories always rang true to me that mutants aren’t outcasts but instead to focus on what makes them special.

Something in the X-Men world would be great. I was a big fan of Wolverine, of course, like everybody else. But I’m also a big fan of Nightcrawler. I love seeing the different iterations and I’m curious to see what happens now that Disney bought FOX and they got the IP back.

Joe: I’m definitely excited to see Nightcrawler, Colossus, and everyone else in the MCU. Do you feel like you usually get cast in hothead roles though, like Pyro? Like with Rufio and Prince Zuko?

Dante Basco: You know, I’ve had all kinds of roles over the last thirty years. Not necessarily, but I guess I do kind of get cast as the hotheads sometimes like with Rufio and with Zuko. I’m usually cast as like the rival of the main character or a sort of bad boy character.

Joe: Is there anything else you’d like to share with our audience?

Dante Basco: Just that I’m excited for Artificial, you know? And I have a Let’s Watch of Avatar: The Last Avatar every Friday at 3:00 pm PST to help raise money for COVID relief. Hopefully my first project with The Filipino Brothers will be out in the fourth quarter of this year. We also have some things in the works for the Rufio prequel, so hopefully we’re able to get that off the ground. I also have my memoir which is From Rufio to Zuko, and once COVID restrictions clear up I’ll be touring for that.

Steven Spielberg is responsible for a number of classic films over the years including the likes of Jaws, Jurassic Park, E.T., and even Hook. In regards to the latter, we recently spoke with Dante Basco, the actor who is best-known for having portrayed Rufio in the film.

Over the years Basco has gained additional fame for such roles as Prince Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender and he was recently cast in Twitch’s scripted sci-fi interactive series Artificial: Remote Intelligence. When we spoke to Dante about his experience on the show, we couldn’t help but to ask a few questions about his time acting alongside Robin Williams.

In addition to learning some interesting tidbits about the movie, we also asked about the prequel that Basco worked on called Bangarang, which we’ve included at the bottom of the article below the audio portion of the interview. Check out what the actor had to say in his comments below!

Joe: I was chatting with my friend Noah, and he had told me a little bit about a short film you had done called Bangarang which is a prequel for Rufio. Can you tell me a little bit about that?

Dante Basco: Oh yeah! I was approached by some filmmakers, Jonah Feingold, who is a USC Grad with his production team. He grew up with Hook and it’s one of his favorite films so we met at a club in Los Angelos and he pitched me the full short and I said let’s collaborate and do it! So we raised some money for it and it actually went viral so now there are some things in the works for the development and finishing a Rufio origin story.

Joe: That’s awesome man, everyone loves Rufio!

Dante Basco: Yeah man, if we can get that off the ground, that’ll be awesome. I think people will be pretty excited about it.

Joe: Yeah, definitely. I think Rufio is the perfect entry point to revive this franchise for a younger generation.

Dante Basco: Totally.

Joe: Now we had talked a little before about how Robin Williams helped you get into poetry. I was curious about the scene where the two of you traded insults back and forth and whether that was off-the-cuff or if it was scripted? And how many takes did it take?

Dante Basco: It was scripted! I don’t remember all the takes with it being so long ago, but it was definitely a full day’s work. It was scripted, but you know with the way Robin is, he’s really like the godfather of improv for film and television, at least at that time he was one of the pioneers doing all of that. So we had to be on our toes to do the scripted version and then to just roll with it and keep up with someone who has such world renown, you know, he was one of the greats.

Joe: Sure, and speaking of greats, what was it like to act under Steven Speilberg at such a young age?

Dante Basco: Yeah, I mean, again, I was very fortunate to be amongst some of the literal legends and gods of our industry and I didn’t take it lightly you know? I was fifteen at the time and I had been studying since I was ten so I knew who all of those people were and I was a huge fan of things like E.T. and Close Encounters and so many things, especially with Robin Williams. So many things were going on and I was there watching. And you know, with Dustin Hoffman being one of the greats, I would just come to set on my days off in order to study and watch the greats work.

Joe: And your hard work definitely paid off. Which would you say you get recognized for more, Rufio or Prince Zuko?

Dante Basco: Thanks man. It’s a generational thing. I think for my whole life I’ve been “Rufio” to the world at large longer than I haven’t been. So I can get into Bangarang chats any day of the week and I think a lot of people recognize me as Rufio, as a “90’s baby”. And then the newer generation that knows me as Prince Zuko is kind of a phenomenon that happened 15 years later, so honestly it’s kind of even depending on where I’m at and the generation of people that I’m around.

Joe: Do you feel like you get cast in these hothead roles like Rufio and Zuko?

Dante Basco: To a degree, you know. I’ve been in all kinds of roles over the last thirty years but I’m usually cast as a hot head guy or a rival to whoever the hero may be. I guess my more popular roles from when I was a kid are the hotheaded bad boy roles like Rufio and Zuko.
