THE STAND Stephen King Adaptation Sets December Premiere Date – Check Out A New Promo Poster

Image

It was announced last year that CBS All Access would air a 9-episode miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s masterful post-apocalyptic horror novel The Stand, and now we finally have an official premiere date.

It was announced today that The Stand will premiere on CBS All Access on December 17, with the episodes airing on a weekly basis.

The series stars James Marsden as principal protagonist Stu Redman, Amber Heard as the conflicted Nadine Cross, Jovan Adepo as Larry Underwood, Heather Graham as Rita Blakemoor, Owen Teague as Harold Lauder, Odessa Young as Frannie Goldsmith, Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail, and Alexander Skarsgård as the demonic Randall Flagg.

For those unfamiliar with King’s novel, The Stand deals with a global pandemic (yes, it’s a scarily prescient tale) known as “Captain Tripps” which wipes out 99% of the world’s population. The survivors are immune to the disease, but are ultimately forced to fight each other as some are drawn to a the light (Abagail), and others to darkness (Flagg).

New Mutants director Josh Boone, who was the driving force behind all previous attempts to adapt the book, will direct, write, and produce the upcoming series.

Check out the new poster below along with some recently released stills, and keep an eye out for the first trailer.

BATMAN: THREE JOKERS – Breaking Down The Shocking First Chapter Of The DC Comics Event

Image

Three Jokers #1 went on sale today, and to call it a game-changer for the world of Batman would be an understatement. While we don’t know how it will affect the wider mythos and current continuity, the revelation that there’s more than one Clown Prince of Crime is undeniably mind-blowing.

Now, we’re taken a deep dive into this opening chapter to bring you a detailed breakdown of what happens and all the biggest reveals. Seriously, you will not see a lot of what happens coming!

It goes without saying that spoilers for the issue follow from this point on, and if you haven’t read it already, we highly recommend that you do. However, if you’re just curious about what to expect, then we definitely have you covered with this breakdown of the event’s first issue.

To take a look through these details, all you guys need to do is click on the “Next” button below!

10. Scars

Three1

After a particularly nasty battle with The Penguin, Batman returns to Wayne Manor to have Alfred patch him up. It’s then the comic book shows us many of the hero’s scars, including those inflicted on him when Bane “Broke the Bat” (confirming that is indeed part of this continuity).

The comic quickly introduces the concept of the three Jokers: “The Criminal” (the classic crook who targets Gotham City’s organised crime families), “The Comedian” (from The Killing Joke), and “The Clown” (who was responsible for murdering Jason Todd all those years ago).

Batman, Batgirl, and Red Hood all have scars left by their respective Clown Princes of Crime, some more signifiant than others, and this opening serves to remind us of what the villain has done to them.

9. Three Crimes, Three Jokers, One Night

Three2

There’s chaos in Gotham City.

The Joker has struck three times seemingly at the exact same time, with one killing the Moxon crime family, another brutally murdering comedian Kelani “Fatman” Apaka, and the final stealing the same chemicals that created The Joker after throwing three men dressed as the Red Hood into them.

One of them has survived, but what did the villain want with this trio? Was he trying to recreate the night he became The Joker, albeit with someone else? As crazy as that sounds, it seems so…

8. “The Boss”

Three3

“The Clown” with the stolen chemicals arrives at an isolated cabin outside of Gotham City, and comes face to face with “The Comedian” (who is decked out in his gear from The Killing Joke).

They taunt one another about taking credit for the other’s crimes, but agree that their “greatest act of madness” is to follow as “The Boss” has something truly crazy in mind. They acknowledge that one of them has to be in charge, and we then learn that it’s “The Criminal” who is calling the shots.

His plan, however, is a real shocker!

7. Making A Better Joker

Three12

What are they going to do with those stolen chemicals from ACE? “What do we do next?” asks “The Criminal.” “We do what we always do. We try to make a better Joker.” He goes on to say that one of them will have to set up the “Factory,” while the other helps him out with a casting call.

The villain believes it’s time The Joker had “more meaning,” and the inference here is clear to see.

The original Joker, “The Criminal,” has spent years creating new Jokers, staging their origin story (presumably with The Red Hood moniker and a stand-in for Batman) and unleashing a new Clown Prince of Crime on Gotham City to take on Batman. What makes these three so special is hard to say, but this is bound to be elaborated on and explained moving forward.

6. Gaggy Returns…

Three4

Gaggy, also known as Gagsworth A. Gagsworthy, was once Joker’s original sidekick, though he ultimately found himself replaced by Harley Quinn. While he has made the odd cameo in modern stories, most of his appearances came during the 1960s (alongside “The Criminal,” we assume).

At this point in the story, Batman, Batgirl, and Red Hood are working together after the two heroes catch Jason Todd interrogating that one ACE survivor in the back of an ambulance.

Gaggy sets his men on the trio, and seems particularly keen to get his hands on Jason. The Joker, meanwhile, is back up to his old tricks, infecting not just fish, but a massive shark this time too.

5. …But Not For Long

Three5

Poor Gaggy doesn’t last long as a well-placed shot from Red Hood sees him eaten by the aforementioned shark. It’s a crazy, fun moment, and one that means this villain’s time is again over.

It’s at this point “The Clown” makes his presence felt, and while he definitely takes the fight to the heroes, they quickly take him down. Understandably, they’re baffled by him using his old tricks again, and as Batman reports to a second Joker sighting by Jim Gordon, Batgirl and Red Hood tie the villain up until he can be returned to Arkham Asylum.

However, it’s at this point things take a dark turn for the heroes left behind to keep an eye on him!

4. “I’ll Be Your Robin”

Three123

With The Joker tied up and at the mercy of Batgirl and Red Hood, he wastes no time at all in taunting the former. While this is happening, Jason once again debates just killing the villain in order to break the cycle of his continuous returns to torment and attack the Bat Family.

The Joker taunts Jason, saying that perhaps the reason he survived is because the villain wanted him to. Why? Well, when he was bashing in the former Robin’s skull with a crowbar, he reveals that Jason said: “Please, Stop! Pleeease! If you let me live…I’ll do anything you say. I’ll be YOUR Robin.” Needless to say, this is new information, and a legitimately shocking moment.

The Joker laughs that Jason becoming Red Hood means, ultimately, he managed to get his way.

3. Jason Todd Murders The Joker

Three1234

Pushed to the brink by these taunts, Jason draws his gun, ignoring Batgirl’s pleas to stop. She leaps into action to try and stop him, but the hero’s shot lands, and he shoots Joker in the head.

There’s no coming back from this; he’s well and truly dead, and after all these years, the former Robin has finally got his revenge on the man who murdered him in cold blood all those years ago.

Of course, there are still two more out there, but “The Clown” is now well and truly gone.

2. “When’s The Last Time You Missed?”

Three12345

Batgirl threw a Batarang to try and stop Jason from killing The Joker, but missed, meaning his shot didn’t miss. While Barbara Gordon is horrified by what he’s done and condemns him for it, Red Hood makes a very good point when he says, “When’s the last time you missed?”

The insinuation here is that she wanted Jason to kill the villain, but couldn’t bring herself to do it. Of course, this isn’t The Joker who left her in a wheelchair, so her revenge is yet to come.

As the issue ends, Jason hopes he’s killed the right one, not knowing that there’s three more out there…

1. What Comes Next?

Three1

This is the big question, and there are still two issues left which will hopefully clear things up. As we’ve established, the DC Universe has indeed had more than one Joker, seemingly with one mastermind who has been pulling the strings all this time and setting a series of Jokers after Batman.

Why has he been doing this and what’s his endgame? This remains to be seen, but every Joker seems to have a significant crime to pin to their name, and this explains why they’re all so different.

Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok clearly have a lot of story left to tell, and Three Jokers is clearly going to continue to surprise. We’ll just have to wait and see what those hold in store for us…

ENOLA HOLMES: The Game Is Afoot In Full Trailer For Netflix Adaptation Starring Millie Bobby Brown

Image

Following a couple of brief teasers, Netflix has released the full trailer for Enola Holmes, which stars Stranger Things alum Millie Bobby Brown as the heroine of the title, along with Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes, The Hunger Games actor Sam Clafin as their older brother Mycroft, and Helena Bonham Carter as their mother.

This take on the story, which comes to us from Killing Eve director Harry Bradbeer and His Dark Materials writer Jack Thorne, begins with Enola “waking on her 16th birthday to find her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has vanished. An assortment of gifts have been left behind, but there are no apparent clues to her whereabouts. Now in the care of her two older brothers, who want to ship her off to a finishing school, Enola escapes through London to find her mom.”

The trailer gives us a much better idea of what to expect from Netflix’s adaptation of the popular YA novel, which looks like it should be an entertaining enough adventure. It’s clearly targeting a younger demographic, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be something for everyone to enjoy.

Do you guys plan on checking out Enola Holmes when it hits Netflix on September 23rd?

WESTWORLD Exclusive Interview With Emmy-Nominated VFX Supervisor Nhat Phong Tran

Image

Westworld season three ended with an apocalyptic big bang that will undoubtedly send season four into uncharted territory as we unearth new mysteries about what’s become of the world and hopefully learn a whole lot more about what Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) discovered in his extended time offline.

With the season finally dropping the veil on what the world outside of the park looks like, it was no surprise to see the acclaimed HBO series receive its third consecutive Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Special Visual Effects, and shortly thereafter, I was granted an exclusive opportunity to get on the phone with the series’ lead VFX supervisor Nhat Phong Tran from PIXOMONDO and talk to him at length about creating the unique world and vehicles of future Los Angeles.

In addition to Westworld, Tran has also worked on a number of prominent projects, including The Amazing Spider-ManOblivion, Fast Five, The Fate of the FuriousThe Orville, and much more.

Check out our full interview below!

___________________________________________________________________

ROHAN: For our readers, could you briefly describe your role as VFX supervisor on Westworld?

NHAT PHONG TRAN: “We worked in collaboration with the VFX team at HBO on Westworld season three. My team at PIXOMONDO worked mostly on environments and the world builds, which the majority was to build the future world that we see outside of Westworld.

ROHAN: How are your different projects assigned? Do you meet with individual filmmakers and pitch your vision or do they contract your company?

NHAT: “In this case, there was already a pre-established relationship with HBO. I’d worked with them already on previous seasons, so it was easy to keep that relationship going.

ROHAN: What is your process like when beginning work on a new season? Do you work with conceptual artists early on to give the filmmakers a general idea of what things will look like or is it the opposite and you begin work after filming has started?

NHAT: “That’s a great question, especially for something like Westworld. They are always pretty good about getting us involved early and introducing us to a digestible amount of information to start out with.

As you know, it’s a very complex show and we don’t want to get confused with too much detail that we should not be focusing on, so yes, we were involved while they were still shooting, especially when there was shooting happening for an LED stage, which is pretty much an interactive backdrop of aerial footage. We got involved early on because that backdrop footage, mainly of Los Angeles, had to be augmented to become our utopian future Los Angeles.

ROHAN:: Unlike the previous two seasons, this year, you actually had to create a futuristic city before ultimately destroying it. Where did look to for inspiration? I know the season was predominantly shot in Singapore, Shanghai, and Los Angeles, did you just look to preexisting architecture or decided to take things in your own direction?

NHAT: “A lot of inspiration was given to us from Singapore being one of the cities. The way the city is designed, it’s very well-balanced in terms of how it combines art with architecture as well as with nature. All of these elements combined makes the city much more enjoyable and more appealing for people to live in. You also don’t have anything petrifyingly pragmatic, so we used a lot of foreign architecture as reference and also the work of Bjarke Ingels, who’s a Danish architect and very well-known for his type of architecture, which kind of falls in line with the Singaporean as well.

We used those two sources as our inspiration for our designs, so what we did was we kind of analyzed the different buildings and molds. We looked a few more specific Singaporean buildings like the Marina One designed by Ingenhoven Architects and we just extrapolated from there to see what other buildings we could build that could fit in the same design language that were set by those inspirational references.

ROHAN: Unlike most dystopian sci-fi worlds, the world we see in season three feels a lot brighter and more optimistic, albeit with its own dark undertone, but compared to something like Blade Runner, this seems like an optimal outcome for humanity moving forward. Was that a conscious decision you made going in?

NHAT: “Absolutely, that was something we very consciously decided to do. It is a very optimistic version of the world, technology has gone in the right direction, we make the right decisions about the environment, clean energy. It seems like people, well most of them, are really living a good life. That is really the world we wanted to portray, and that is why we consciously steered away from the more daunting future that you would see in like Blade Runner where things are overpopulated and it’s pretty dark and bleak. Instead, the thought was because of the technology, the right decisions were made and we managed to control a lot of events to set humanity and the environment on the right course.

ROHAN: There’s a real standout sequence where Tessa Thompson’s character Charlotte Hale is in a vehicle when it explodes. Could you speak on working on that, if you did, and from the reel, it looks like the vehicles were fully digital? Was that the case?

NHAT: “That sequence with her getting blown up in the car, we unfortunately didn’t work on anything with the actors, but we did design the cars and all the flying vehicles. Those were all custom made. There was one car in particular that came from the art department very early on that we called the RideShare – it was the vehicle that they used a lot that was seen as sort of a futuristic Uber or Lyft.”

To better answer your question, a lot of the vehicles were custom made for us to use on the series, we actually used a concept Audi for the electric, self-driving car, but other than that, it was all digital.

ROHAN:: In addition to Westworld, you’ve also worked on another new sci-fi project that explores unique worlds in The Orville. How does your approach different when working on a drama like Westworld versus a comedy like The Orville where Seth MacFarlane could dream up literally any scenario.

NHAT: “The Orville, it’s great! Westworld is very grounded in reality, and is essentially a futuristic take on how our world is now. The Orville takes us to places that don’t exist and like you said, Seth may come up with a planet or space anomaly that we’ll have to completely realize. The challenge is to visualize something that only exists in theory, which can be very exciting because you’re entering uncharted terrority.

THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Shares A Must-See 4K Version Of The Film’s First Teaser Trailer

Image

The Batman trailer that premiered at DC FanDome on Saturday night got everyone talking (even Justice League: The Snyder Cut director Zack Snyder), but the visuals were a little murky, and that left some fans in the dark. Now, however, we have a crystal clear 4K version which makes it a little easier to see what this Dark Knight is getting up to in Gotham City.

It’s obviously the same trailer, but we think you’ll appreciate checking this out, especially if you have a 4K compatible device. Eventually, the film will reach this format on Blu-ray and HBO Max, though the latter has yet to debut that quality of streaming for paying subscribers.

The Batman promises to be an intense, gritty, gory ride, and it’s hard to believe it will have anything other than an R-Rating based on the level of violence seen throughout this teaser trailer. That’s not been confirmed, though, and it’s not something Reeves commented on during DC FanDome.

IGN has shared some shots from the trailer as well, which give us a much better look at characters like Batman, Catwoman, The Riddler, and Oz (who hates being called The Penguin, apparently).
