The New Mutants director Josh Boone has already spoken about wanting to introduce Warlock in his X-Men spinoff, but it sounds like the fan-favorite alien came a lot closer to making the final draft than we realized – and Boone even had someone in mind to play him.

During an interview with Nerdist, Boone revealed that he had conversations with none other than Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali-G, Borat, Les Miserables) about potentially coming on board to provide the voice for what would have been a fully CG character. He didn’t say how close it came to becoming a reality, but it wouldn’t have mattered anyway because the studio threw a spanner in the works.

Budget constraints meant that Boone was basically forced to choose between Warlock and the villainous Demon Bear, and obviously settled on the latter.

The New Mutants probably won’t get a sequel (if it performs much better than expected it is possible, but unlikely), so chances are we won’t get to see Warlock make his big screen debut for a very long time. If it were to happen, though, we might just see Doug Ramsay, aka Cypher, introduced alongside his “self friend.”

The New Mutants is set to hit theaters on August 28. No press screenings are being held, which may not be a very good sign – although it could simply indicate that we’ll see a Disney+ release shortly after.

The Boys features a tonne of great characters, many of whom are larger than life. However, it’s Hughie Campbell and Starlight who serve as our entry point into this twisted world, and their relationship was a huge part of the show’s first year. That looks set to continue in the upcoming season two as well, though we obviously find them in a very different place after everything that’s happened.

They’ve both grown in confidence, but with Hughie now trying to lead The Boys and Starlight becoming a little more devious in how she deals with her teammates, do they risk losing themselves and what they like about each other? That’s the question we put to stars Jack Quaid and Erin Moriarty during a recent roundtable interview, and they shared some big hints about what’s to come.

Moriarty: That’s a really interesting question.

Quaid: That is. Go ahead, Erin.

Moriarty: I think Hughie and Starlight serve as, you know, kind of standard examples of people maybe perhaps from a small town or sheltered world where they’ve been sheltered by their parents, then they leave their home and get exposed to some of the realities of the world and heartbreak and the fact not everyone is to be trusted. I do think it’s very common to momentarily lose yourself as a by product of putting up too thick of a wall. I went through that. You go from being naive to aware, and then almost too distrustful. I think that in the beginning of season two, Annie is in a place of being heartbroken and having such a thick wall up that she’s just on autopilot and has lost a little bit of her core self. A big part of her season two trajectory and journey is finding her way back to herself and a middle ground of not being naive, but still staying true to who she is. 

Quaid: That’s just an interesting tension that our characters go through a lot of the time. You have to be the audience surrogate in a lot of ways, and you do want your character to step up for themselves, but you don’t want them to go too far. That is something I’ve always found interesting about playing Hughie. There are times he steps over the line and recognises it, but whose job is it to pull him back or does he have to pull himself back? I think that’s one of the key aspects to the character that I’ve really enjoyed playing over the past two seasons. It’s been awesome. 

It seems the relationship between Hughie and Starlight will deepen a lot during season two, and taking them down some darker paths will be no bad thing. We just have to hope they’re able to remain the characters we love, though it does sound like that’s something they’ll both struggle with.

Bill and Ted Face the Music was set to be released in theaters and VOD on the same day this September 1, but it was recently announced that the lovable metal-heads’ latest adventure had been moved up by one week, and will come our way on August 28 – the same day The New Mutants is expected to hit theaters.

Orion Pictures has now sent us over the first clip from the movie, and it introduces the daughter of Bill and Ted’s time-travelling pal Rufus (the late George Carlin). Kelly (Kristen Schaal) drops in on the boys to take them into the future to address a “potentially a very serious problem” while their daughters Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea (Samara Weaving) watch on in concern.

While we probably won’t believe it until it actually happens, Disney is pushing forward with that August 28th release date for The New Mutants, and tickets have now officially gone on sale. 

To mark the occasion, a new “Special Look” at Josh Boone’s Marvel Comics adaptation has been released, while there are also three new posters from Dolby Cinema, Cinemark XD, and Fandango. The marketing campaign for The New Mutants has picked up a lot in recent weeks, and despite most theaters being closed, it seems Disney is now going all in on getting this one out there.

That’s understandable after all those delays, though there are plenty of fans who remain convinced that the movie will quickly arrive on Disney+/PVOD platforms following its theatrical debut as Disney will have then met obligations made before the merger with 20th Century Fox. 

Despite the negativity that’s often surrounded The New Mutants, there’s no denying that it’s pretty intriguing, and after all these delays, you’d hope that it’s at least a little better than Dark Phoenix!

Time will tell on that front, but if this is all to be believed, there’s only ten days until we found out one way or another…assuming you can make it to your local theater, of course.
