As many major theater chains remain closed indefinitely with no major domestic releases on the horizon, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group introduced the “Watched at Home Top 20” list earlier this year, which tallies up the most popular titles consumed on disc and digital (excluding outside subscription-based streaming platforms). 

There’s finally a new #1 as RLJ Entertainment’s The Tax Collector roared past DreamWorks/Universal’s Trolls World Tour, ending the animated sequel’s five-week reign. David Ayer (Suicide Squad; Fury) directed the crime drama which starred Shia LaBeouf (Transformers; The Peanut Butter Falcon) and Lana Parrilla (Once Upon a Time; 24), amongst others. 

The first and third seasons of Paramount’s Yellowstone remained in third and fifth, respectively, while Universal’s psychological horror film You Should Have Left starring Golden Globe-winner Kevin Bacon (Patriots Day; Black Mass) and Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls; Mamma Mia!) dipped to fourth.

The rest of the top five was rounded out by season two of the Kevin Costner-fronted series, Screen Media Films’ The Outpost in seventh, Warner Bros.’ Scoob! in eighth, IFC Films’ The Rental starring Alison Brie (Community; GLOW) and Dan Stevens (Legion; Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga) in ninth, and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog in tenth.

As for the backhalf of the weekly list, Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom jumped up all the way to eighteenth following a recent sale on all digital retailers, including iTunes and Vudu.

Iron Fist and Mortal Kombat star Lewis Tan’s latest project is Ji, a new sci-fi short film which recently premiered on WatchDust.com (you can also check it out below). 

Directed by Ben Griifin, it follows a modified human from a man-made planet who risks his life to travel to where humanity originated. But will he choose love or his civilization? The short also stars Cosmic Sin‘s Eva De Dominici, and there’s definitely feature potential with a project like this one.

We’ll bring you our full interview with Lewis on Monday, but we also made sure to ask the actor about his time playing Shatterstar in Deadpool 2. As funny as it was to see X-Force killed off one after the other, many fans were furious about the fate of Tan’s character, and we asked if he initially hoped to have a much larger role in the X-Men Universe before the Disney/Fox merger.

“When I signed on it was fairly hidden from me what was going to happen,” Tan explained. “Once I found out I was still excited. working with Ryan and Dave was such a good experience and I love the characters [of] both Deadpool and Shatterstar. Of course, now I fell in love with playing him and would love to do a spinoff where we can explore Mojoworld in a Mad Max meets Gladiator type of way, that would be a dream.”

That honestly sounds awesome, and we can only hope Marvel Studios now gives Tan another chance in the not too distant future. The premise of this spinoff would be a great fit for Shatterstar, and who knows, perhaps he’ll make his own “fan-made” short somewhere down the line?

After seven seasons and 136 episodes, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., finally closed its doors this past Wednesday with an emotional series finale that brought a satisfying conclusion to Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his ragtag team’s nearly decade-long journey. 

While Coulson will likely remain dead in the prime Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity, the series finale did leave the door open for a possible continuation of his adventures (if Kevin Feige is so inclined) as he was last seen jetting off in Lola to locations unknown to aid a whole new generation of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

The Mandalorian debuted on Disney+ to widespread critical acclaim last November, and Star Wars fans – who are divided on seemingly everything – ended up coming together to celebrate the first live-action TV series set in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. The reaction to The Rise of Skywalker, on the other hand, was overwhelmingly negative, so what did the show do right? 

Well, it managed to find a middle ground appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers to the franchise, something executive producer Jon Favreau explains was their mission statement from the start.

“We wanted to really wind it back to the things that inspired the original Star Wars and really get it small in scale and tell simple stories, because part of what you inherit when you’re going to see Star Wars now is this whole history, because the stories have been told for decades, and it was nice, with the new medium, to be able to start with a new set of characters to introduce a new audience,” Favreau told Deadline in a recent interview.

“But we always knew…and this is something I learned from…over at Marvel and working with Kevin Feige, is you always want to keep the core fans in mind, because they have been the ones that’ve been keeping the torch lit for many, many years, but these are also stories for young people and for new audiences,” he continued. “These are myths, and so you always want to have an outstretched hand to people who might not have that background.”

“And so you’re really telling two stories at once. You’re telling the story for the people who are fresh eyes, and you’re telling the story for the people who’ve been there with the property and with the stories and the characters for so many years, and make sure that you’re honoring them, as well.”

That sounds like the perfect approach, and it’s for that reason the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies do find so much success. This approach is one the Star Wars sequels could have really benefited from, as the way characters like Luke Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine were handled alienated a lot of fans who had certain hopes for them in the follow-up to the original trilogy.

The Mandalorian returns to Disney+ for a second season this October.

Josh Boone’s The New Mutants is finally coming to theaters in two weeks time, and Disney has now released a new featurette which spotlights the five troubled young heroes of the title.

The sneak peek features stars Blu Hunt, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Anya Taylor-Joy introducing their respective characters while we see some snippets of footage of Mirage, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot and Magik in action.

Most of the shots have been taken from previously released trailers and TV spots, but there is some cool new stuff here – including a glimpse of Sam fully unleashing his powers and blasting around the courtyard. Still no sign of Rahne in werewolf form, but that’s most likely being saved for the movie.
