THE SUICIDE SQUAD: James Gunn Hints That Steve Agee Is Not Playing King Shark

Image

Recent set photos from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad have revealed that Steve Agee’s role in the film requires him to wear a mo-cap suit.  This of course comes after Deadline Hollywood reported back in August 2019 that Agee would be providing the voice for King Shark.  However, the Tweets below seem to cast suspicion on whether that was ever the case or if Gunn decided to go with another cgi-brute to round out Task Force X’s ranks.

That’s a wrap on our time in #Panama. #TheSuicideSquad isn’t quite done shooting but we’re approaching the finish line and we did wrap some key cast members this week – @oisocesoj, @MelchiorDaniela, and @steveagee.… https://t.co/yFTjqT8ZNm

You’re welcome!! And you’re incredible in the movie… even though you might not quite be who people think you are. 🤣 https://t.co/N5Pe8JoBKS

In case the Tweet above doesn’t load or is deleted, Gunn replies to Agee’s gratitude with, “You’re welcome!! And you’re incredible in the movie… even though you might not quite be who people think you are. 🤣

That certainly sounds as if Gunn is hinting that Agee isn’t playing King Shark but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the character doesn’t appear in the film. Deadline could have simply mixed up which actors are portraying which characters in the film.

The Suicide Squad aka Suicide Squad 2 is slated to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.  Gunn wrote and directed the pic that includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, David Dastmalchian as Poka-Dot Man, and Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher.  Additionally, Idris Elba, John Cena, Storm Reid,  Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, Alice Braga, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, and Taika Waititi all have undisclosed roles.

HAWKEYE & MS. MARVEL Will Debut In 2021, According To Leaked Preview Of Hasbro’s Upcoming Marvel Legends Line

Image

Ahead of tomorrow’s 2020 American International Toy Fair in New York, a preview of Hasbro’s upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe-based Marvel Legends line has found its way online and seemingly confirmed – and reaffirmed – much of what has been speculated over the course of this past year.

As expected, their 2020 line of Legends products will focus on a pair of theatrical MCU releases in Cate Shortland’s Black Widow (May 1) and Chloé Zhao’s The Eternals (November 6) and a pair of Disney+ titles in Malcolm Spellman’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (August) and Jac Schaeffer’s WandaVision (December). There are also toys on the way for Disney XD’s Spider-Man: Maximum Venom animated series and Crystal Dynamics/Eidos Montréal’s Marvel’s Avengers video game.

2021 is where things get considerably more interesting as the theatrical release calendar reiterates four big titles for the year in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (February 12), Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 7), Jon Watts’ untitled Spider-Man sequel (July 16) and Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder (November 5).

Michael Waldron’s Loki (Early 2021) and A.C. Bradley’s What If…? animated series (Mid-2021) are both still on track to debut in 2021 and it looks like so is Jonathan Igla’s Hawkeye (Late 2021), which has been rumored to begin production this September. However, it does appear as though Marvel Studios may have made a slight change to their schedule and slotted Bisha K. Ali’s Ms. Marvel to make its debut before the Jeremy Renner-fronted series.

If that’s the case, then fans should expect some sort of major casting news within the next few weeks/months, possibly to coincide with the official announcement of a Captain Marvel sequel, where Kamala Khan is also rumored to play a part.

Everything here is, of course, subject to change at any given moment, but for now, 2021 is really shaping up to be the biggest year the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen.

UNCHARTED Star Tom Holland Reveals HIs Long Awaited Video Game Movie Will Begin Filming In Four Weeks

Image

It’s been a really long time coming, but it looks like Sony is just about ready to finally roll cameras on their live-action movie adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed Uncharted video game series of the same name, which has esentially been stuck in some stage of development hell for the better part of the last decade.

Speaking with IGN, at the blue carpet world premiere of Disney/Pixar’s Onward, star Tom Holland (Spider-Man: Far From Home; Avengers: Endgame) spoke at length about the upcoming Uncharted film and revealed that filming will actually begin in four weeks in Berlin, Germany.

Outside of the film being an origin story, not much else is known just yet, but it appears that Ruben Fleischer (Venom; Zombieland) has indeed closed his deal to direct the film, presumably using a screenplay from Joe Carnahan (Bad Boys for LifeStretch) and Rafe Judkins (Chuck; Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

Holland will star as Nathan Drake with 2x Academy Award-nominee Mark Wahlberg (Spenser ConfidentialScoob!) signed on to play Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Additional cast will likely be revealed in the coming weeks as we approach the production start date.

Uncharted hits theaters March 5, 2021.

If I’m honest, one of my favorite video games ever is the fourth Uncharted game… Unbelievable. And lots of the inspiration from the film has come from that game in particular,” Holland said. “It was interesting, when I sat down with [Sony Pictures Chairman] Tom Rothman and we were talking about video games, and I was like “Oh, I’ve just finished Uncharted.” And he was like “Well, why don’t you play Nathan Drake?” I remember being like, “I would do anything to play Nathan Drake. Please, that would be amazing.” So yeah, we start shooting in like four weeks. Mark Wahlberg is going to be amazing as Sully. The stunt department that we have out there in Berlin have done an amazing job already, prepping the stunts, and it’s going to be an exciting one.

There was definitely a lot of inspiration that came from the games, but it’s a very young, fresh take on the character because, obviously, we didn’t get to meet him all that much when he was younger,” Holland explained. “But it’s a pretty awesome movie, and it’s global. We travel the world, we see some amazing places, and Mark Wahlberg and I are going to have a great summer together.

According to Decider, the show will return for a thirteen-episode second season starting on Friday, April 3, with new episodes releasing on the streamer’s traditional weekly schedule. – The DC Universe has since confirmed their report.

In addition to Cuoco, the show’s illustrious voice cast features the likes of Lake Bell (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as Poison Ivy, Alan Tudyk (Doom Patrol) as Joker/Clayface, Diedrich Bader (Veep) as Batman, Jim Rash (Community) as Riddler, Ron Funches (Undateable) as King Shark, Christopher Meloni (Man of Steel) as Commissioner James Gordon, Tony Hale (Veep) as Doctor Psycho, J. New STAR WARS Film In Development With SLEIGHT Director J.D. Dillard & LUKE CAGE Writer Matt Owens Attached

Image

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Walt Disney Studios and Lucasfilm have enlisted director/writer J.D. Dillard (Sleight, Sweetheart, Devotion) and writer Matt Owens (Luke Cage; The DefendersAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) to develop a new film set in the greater Star Wars universe.

While plot details are murky at best, Deadline is reporting that the film may take place on the hidden Sith plant of Exegol, which was introduced last year in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and revealed to be the secret hiding place of the resurrected Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). – Deadline’s claim has since been debunked by THR’s Borys Kit, who wrote the original story.

It’s uncertain, however, at this point in time whether their potential film will receive a traditional theatrical release or if it’s being prepped for a debut on the Disney+ streaming service.

It should be noted that this new Dillard/Owens project is a completely new development and has no ties to the Kevin Feige/Kathleen Kennedy-backed project nor does it have any connection to the Rian Johnson trilogy, which is reportedly still in some stage of development.

Disney has already booked December 16, 2022; December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026 as potential release dates for future Star Wars films, but it remains uncertain which of these productions will ultimately occupy the aforementioned dates, especially considering the studio seems to be shifting their attention to expanding the franchise via Disney+ rather than rush it back to the big screen after the underwhelming box office returns of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Just a clarification: The new #StarWars project does not take place on Exegol. I wrote a casual and fun line regarding plot details being unknown but tied it to the subject matter (I do that sometimes) and Deadline has taken it and run with it. https://t.co/qeU496aVFf

SUPERMAN: RED SON Spoiler-Free Review; “A Hard-Hitting Story Which Is More Than Just Action Scenes”

Image

Warner Bros. Animation has been on quite the run with its slate of DC offerings as of late, and Superman: Red Son (based on Mark Millar and Dave Johnson’s acclaimed limited series) is another winner for the studio. Like previous adaptations, there are things here which work better than the comics it’s based on and moments which are sorely missed, but it makes for an overall satisfying adventure which should have no problem keeping fans of the source material happy.

Following a similar structure to the comic book, Superman: Red Son once again takes us to Soviet Russia for a tale that spans decades as we learn what would have happened if Kal-El’s rocket landed in the USSR instead of Smallville, Kansas. Along the way, we’re introduced to different versions of familiar faces, including Batman, Wonder Woman, and even the Green Lantern Corps. In the capable hands of director Sam Liu, this action-packed adventure is at its best when it explores the different relationships this alternate reality has created. Whether it’s a fun new take on Superman’s relationship with Lois Lane or a quiet, but still impactful, reveal about Diana Prince’s sexuality, it’s never not enjoyable to spend time with these reimagined characters.

Freed from tying into past or upcoming DC animated adventures, the film retains the style of animation we’ve grown used to over the past few years, but still includes some eye-catching visuals, and a feel which is definitely reminiscent of the comic book it’s based on. It’s still a shame that there’s not a bigger difference in terms of style between each of these movies and it feels like this would have been the perfect project to take some risks with in that respect.

This Man of Steel may be a dictator, but there are enough elements of the Superman we all know and love for you to root for this version of the hero as he clearly struggles with his newfound role ruling over the Soviet Union. From an earnest youngster to  a man struggling to do the right thing, he occasionally heads down some darker paths and Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) brings the right amount of gravitas to the iconic DC Comics creation…along with a convincing Russian accent!  Unfortunately, the movie suffers from a few uninspired performances, but Vanessa Marshall (Star Wars Rebels) makes for an excellent Diana Prince and it would be no bad thing for her to become Warner Bros. Animation’s go to choice for the Amazon warrior.

The highlight, however, may be Diedrich Bader’s (Napoleon Dynamite) Lex Luthor. We’ve seen a lot of versions of that villain in these films over the past few years, but this heroic (well, mostly) take on the character has a good reason to hate Superman. One of the most exciting things about watching Superman: Red Son is being left struggling to decide who you should be rooting for. It’s a nice change of pace for one of these films to actually get us invested in a legitimately hard-hitting story which is more than just action scenes and comic book panels come to life. There have been rumblings for a while now that a live-action version of this tale could be something that’s explored on the big screen one day, but even that might struggle to top what we see here. The only thing we’d like to see in that which is sometimes missing here are a few more risks which help ensure it leaves an even greater lasting impact.

With a strong story and a stellar cast, Superman: Red Son features a complex and compelling take on characters like Superman and Lex Luthor which help put it up there with classics like Under The Red Hood and The Killing Joke.
