Viral racist TikTok Video at high school leads to student walkout

Image via Wikipedia

Hundreds of students walked out of their high school in Oregon last week when a video began to go viral on TikTok featuring a student saying racial slurs. While the video has since been removed, it featured “a female student sitting in bed methodically recites racial slurs for Black people, Muslims, Asians, and Latinos,” according to NBC News.

“I didn’t believe it, I was like, ‘No way,’” Sean Sorko-Ram, a 17-year-old Black student at the school, told NBC. “You hear someone say the N-word, you hear things here and there, but all of them together in one video… The best word I can use is flabbergasted.”

The video fired up students throughout Tigard High School, which sparked the walkout. According to the school’s official publication called The Paw, it seems that the issues may stem from the school’s failure to enforce its policies about hate speech.

“In my speech I talked about how the administration was being hypocritical about their policy when it comes to hate speech,” Henry Castillo, president of the school’s No Place For Hate club explained. “I don’t think that the policies should be changed but I do think that they have to actually [be] enforced.”

School principal Brian Bailey addressed the student body and staff in an email on the situation.  He wrote that their “focus will be to address the individuals who have caused harm and equally as important, to provide spaces and resources to those who have been harmed by this careless act.”

It looks like the school will have a lot of work to do as, according to Sorko-Ram, racism is quite common within the school. She has even been called the N-word during class. “I was a freshman, and I was in English class,” she said. “There was this boy who sat next to me and thought it would be funny to call me an ‘ape n*****,’ hard ‘r.’ In that moment you just kind of sit there and you’re like, ‘What?’”

While students like Sorko-Ram want to see the student expelled, the school has commented that this is not the usual action taken in cases like this.

Is there a way to get the 2022 profile badge on TikTok?

TikTok Time

TikTok is an app that’s all about creation and expressing yourself, so it would make sense that you might want to jazz up your profile by adding a unique badge. There have been several badge variations on TikTok, but the 2021 commemorative badge from last year has been one of the more common ones.

Fortunately, unlike a verification badge, any user can get their hands on these profile badges. That said, there may be a waiting period involved with some of them.

What about the 2022 profile badge?

At the time of this writing, there is no way to get the 2022 TikTok profile badge. You’ll likely be able to get the 2022 badge later this year or early next year in the same way that users can get the 2021 badge right now. This is done by answering a question related to your year.

We’ll explain how you can unlock the 2021 badge for your TikTok, as it’s likely that the 2022 badge will be distributed in a similar method. Just follow these steps:

  • Open up TikTok to the page where you’re able to record your unique clip.
  • You’ll see a menu option on the right-hand side that says “Reply.” Press this.
  • This will bring up a menu with suggestions of questions to answer with the theme of 2021.
  • Select one of these and film your response to the question.
  • Once you post the response, you simply need to close TikTok and once you reopen the app and visit your profile, you should have the 2021 badge.

The 2022 badge could also be distributed the same way the 2021 badge initially was at the end of 2020. This saw users check out and share their year on TikTok to unlock the badge.

This method can be completed as follows:

  • Find another user that has the badge. Head to their profile and press the badge. Now select “Get your badge.”
  • If you follow through and check out your year on TikTok, it will prompt you to share the highlights with your followers.
  • Do this and you’ll gain access to the new badge.

Until the 2022 badge rolls out, TikTok users will just have to hang tight. In the meantime, why not decorate your profile with the 2021 badge by following the above method? It may prime you for the big 2022 badge reveal.

This article will be updated when a method to gain the 2022 badge is revealed.

The ‘Ring Light’ trend is blowing up on TikTok

TikTok Ring Light challenge

The latest TikTok trend has people showing off their transition skills in brief, sensuous videos.

Frequent users of the app have likely seen at least a few participating videos, identified by the same music excerpt and exceedingly simple premise. If you’ve seen more than one or two videos of people taking their shirts off and swinging their Ring Light around, you’ve stumbled onto InfinityTok.

What is the Ring Light Challenge?

The Ring Light Challenge, also known as the Infinity Challenge, doesn’t have any complicated or potentially dangerous rules. Like the Silhouette trend of early 2021, it’s more centered around body positivity.

Videos participating in this trend almost always take the same approach. They’ll see a creator hoist their Ring Light off its stand and over their head while in a fully lit room, only to undergo a sudden transition into the dark. The Ring Light, now the only illumination in the video, backlights the user—most of whom have stripped off a few layers of clothing—and provides a sultry, silhouetted look at their favorite feature.

For many female creators, the focus generally lands on their head or shoulders, while most many creators allow their stomach muscles to become the focal point. Every participating video is soundtracked by the same song: “Infinity” by Jaymes Young.

Participating TikToks

The vast majority of the TikToks participating in the Ring Light trend contain very hot people showing off their best attributes. Numerous videos see shredded men ditch their shirts to shine a light on those sweet, sweet stomach muscles.

There are also plenty of dudes fully committed to showing off their shoulders and arms.

Entries into the challenge from female participants are a bit more diverse. For one thing, plenty of women who don’t look like they’re carved out of marble are taking part.

Some users are also finding more ways to use the Ring Light to their advantage, rather than stick with the most straightforward option.

The trend quickly inspired people to branch out and spurred on the challenge among dog owners along with the owners of stellar abs.

It also, predictably, inspired heaps of parodies. These might be the best entries yet.

How to change your TikTok username

TikTok is a great place to watch and share video clips with the rest of the world, and all it takes to start is a download of the app. You’ll then be asked to choose a username, which is what people using the app will see when they view your content.

You can have pretty much any username you’d like that isn’t already in use, meaning you can tailor it to the kind of content you plan on posting on your page or simply what you want other users to know you by. This can raise issues, though, especially if one day you find yourself wanting to change a username you’ve already chosen.

It’s not uncommon for TikTok users to grow tired of their current usernames or want to change them for privacy reasons. Fortunately, you can change your name extremely easily with just a few simple steps.

How to change your TikTok username

TikTok Time

Here’s what you’ll need to do if you want to change your username on TikTok.

  • First, head to the TikTok app and open your profile page. You can find this in the bottom right of the main screen.
  • Once there, press “Edit Profile” to open up a bunch of further options to customize your page.
  • From there, select the Username option and type in whatever name you desire for your TikTok account.
  • It will then tell you if the name you’re after is available or not. If it is, then press “Save” in the top right corner and you’re done! If it’s not, you’ll need to play with variations on the name until you find one that’s available.

Keep in mind that you can only change your username once every 30 days. If you’d like to change the name visible at the top of your profile, then simply follow the same steps above but select Name instead of Username.

How to change your age on TikTok

When you set up your TikTok account, it should come as no surprise that you’ll need to provide a handful of details such as your name and age. Some of these details, like your username, can easily be changed, but others aren’t so simple.

One of the most important parts of your TikTok account can also be one of the most difficult to edit: your age. You’ll need to be over 13 years old to make an account, but if you enter your age incorrectly and are looking to fix that, we’ve got you covered.

Though you can’t change the age on your TikTok account manually by yourself, there’s another way to change it if you need to.

How to change your age on TikTok

If you want your age changed on TikTok, you’ll need to contact the platform directly either via email or through the app. You can email [email protected], explain your situation, and request a change.

The other way to go about it is by using the in-app support system. Here’s a step-by-step guide to completing that process.

  • First, open the TikTok app on your device.
  • Next, navigate to your account screen, which can be done from the “me” menu in the bottom right corner of the main screen.
  • Now you’ll want to press the Settings menu button in the top right. This will appear like three lines.
  • From the Settings and Privacy page, scroll down until you see Support and select this from the list.
  • From the Support options, choose “Report a Problem,” “Account and Profile,” “Editing,” “Profile,” and “Other.”
  • Now choose “Need more help?” and you’ll be taken to a feedback form where you can enter your request and submit it for consideration.

Following either of these methods, you’ll be contacted by a TikTok customer support rep who will ask for further identification before any changes can be made to your account.

These are the most-liked videos on TikTok

tiktok

Now that TikTok is starting to become oversaturated with creators hoping to make it big, there are hundreds of videos full of dance routines, pranks, and crazy transitions for our viewing enjoyment. With everyone gunning for a spot on TikTok’s Top 10 list, it can be hard to keep up with who’s actually running the game on the popular platform.

Of course, if you’re a regular TikToker, then you’re aware that viral sensations like Charli D’Amelio, Addison Rae, and Bella Poarch are currently the most successful creators on the app, with all three earning millions of likes only seconds after posting. As with everything, once a few people get their time in the spotlight, they tend to overshadow everyone else hoping to achieve similarly epic numbers.

That said, there are plenty of videos made by other creators that have remained among the most-liked despite the competition created by TikTok’s Big Three. Just in case you haven’t been paying attention, here’s a list of the videos that are currently on the TikTok Top 10.

Franek Bielak’s art

Though he’s only 15 years old, Franek Bielak has earned himself a spot on the most-liked TikTok list consistently for his unique and impressive artwork. Currently, one of his drawing videos has earned 43.6 million likes.

Billie Eilish’s first TikTok

Pop star Billie Eilish recently joined TikTok and being an established celebrity has certainly made a big difference in helping her earn views. On her first video alone, Eilish was able to earn 25.5 million likes, and all she did was try out the Time-Warp Scan filter! Crazy, right?

“British Promise Cats”

There’s one thing that no human being can ignore: a fascination with cute animals just being themselves. And nothing beats watching a cute cat stick his paw and head through a tube while the camera is rolling. Thanks to this very simple idea, “British Promise Cats” currently has 3.3 million likes and counting.

Nick Luciano’s “Sugarcrush” parody video

Known for posting videos of his cowboy lifestyle, Nick Luciano is another creator who has made it on the Top 10 list with his comedic posts and parodies. Another parody video aimed at making people laugh, TikTok creator Nick Luciano’s copy of fellow creator @kaylavoid’s original lip-synching video quickly went viral after it was posted. The video now has over 48 million likes.

A wave hitting a camera

Creator Jordy usually posts incredible clips of his ocean adventures and each one of them has received millions of likes. He even has one video that shows an incoming wave submerging his camera, which provides both a beautiful ocean view and a brief underwater experience. That video is currently sitting at 28 million likes.

Debbie Ryan’s “What I’d Wear” challenge

Actress Debby Ryan made good use of her past characters when she participated in the “What I’d Wear” challenge. From Disney Channel’s Jessie series to the darker Netflix comedy Insatiable, Ryan changed into the various outfits from the past and gave many fans a great nostalgic trip back in time. It’s not surprising that the video has managed to earn 25.8 million views. Once again, it doesn’t hurt that Ryan is already a well-established celebrity.

JustMaiko’s “Ahi” challenge

Creator JustMaiko is currently one of the biggest creators on TikTok. Thanks to his fun and often unique dance videos, he’s managed to snag features from other famous dancers like Jason Derulo. But the video where he got his little brother to join him for a dance on the escalator for the “Ahi” challenge was so adorable and well-choreographed that the post is currently sitting at 25.7 million likes.

Khabane Lame T-shirt stuck in car door

Italian TikTok creator Khabane Khaby Lame quickly reached TikTok stardom with his simple posts on humanity’s inability to master straightforward tasks. He is currently the second most-followed TikToker after Charli D’Amelio with 114.6 million followers. Just a video where he recreates a TikToker’s attempt to free their shirt from a trapped car door using scissors has gotten Lame a whopping 30.8 million likes.

ToTouchAnEmu “Stay” dance routine

Using a drone, TikTok creator ToTouchAnEmu attempted a dance to Kid La’ROI’s “Stay” after watching fellow Tick Toker Max Taylor do the dance. Inadvertently, ToTouchAnEmu breathed new life into the dance trend, which led other TikTokers to use drones to capture their dance footage for the challenge. The video is now one of the most liked at 43 million likes and has been seen 300 million times since its posting.

Lioness hugging her handler

From cute little cats to the big hunters of the jungle, everyone on TikTok loves a good animal video. This clip of a lioness hugging a man is no exception. Posted by @fxxkmin17, it shows a lioness being very ecstatic at the sight of her handler. While Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” plays in the background, the two buddies fall to the ground and frolic in a heartwarming (yet quite dangerous) video that has currently gotten 30.3 million likes since being posted in February.

Other most-liked videos

Just because these are the videos currently on the top 10 list, that doesn’t mean that they’re the only ones most-liked on TikTok. There are many others that have even surpassed the number of likes on the top 10 list. Creators like longtime illusionist Zack King have reached billions of views with his online magic. His highest viewed video⏤which currently sits at 2.2 billion viewsconsists of his attempt to ride a broomstick like Harry Potter. He even got into costume for the occasion.

Then there’s creator Kison Kee and his milk fiasco. In the hilarious video, which absolutely serves no other purpose than to make you laugh, Kee slides his feet into plastic cups before falling and smashing a whole bottle of milk onto the floor. Sounds pretty stupid, doesn’t it? Well, that stupidity has gone on to earn Kee a 275.8 million views and 26.8 million likes, so apparently he’s doing something right.

How to block and unblock users on TikTok

TikTok is a great place to share all kinds of content, whether it’s commentary, dancing, comedy, or anything else you can dream up. There are few limits to what you can share on the platform, and given this truth, sometimes you might not want to see certain users’ creations⏤and vice versa.

Thankfully, TikTok has a block feature that will allow you to limit specific users from seeing, sharing, or commenting on your TikToks. There are several reasons why you might want to block a user, but whatever they are, the process is fortunately very simple.

How to block and unblock users on TikTok

tiktok

First things first, you’ll need to have the TikTok app installed on your device and be logged into your account. Once you’ve done this, you’re already halfway there. These are the rest of the steps you’ll need to follow in order to block a fellow TikToker.

  • Find the profile of the person you’d like to block by searching their name or pressing on their account image via the clip you’re currently viewing.
  • Press the three dots in the top right corner of their profile to bring up the menu.
  • From the menu, select the block option and confirm your choice. The user will then be blocked and neither of you can see each other’s content.

If, down the line, you’d like to unblock this user for whatever reason, this can be done through the same process detailed above, only the option will now say “unblock” rather than “block.”

Like everything else, your taste in TikTok creators may change over time and there might come a day when you don’t want to see one or more of the accounts you’re following anymore. Fortunately, unfollowing fellow users is quick and simple and you can do it right now.

How do I unfollow someone on TikTok?

TikTok Time

Unfollowing a fellow TikToker can be done simply by visiting their user page. Here’s a step-by-step guide on what to do:

  • First, find the user you’d like to unfollow either by pressing their account image on a video of theirs or by searching their name.
  • Once you’re on their profile, simply press the middle button that looks like a figure with a tick on it.
  • Now you’ll see the follow button appear once again, signifying that you no longer are following that user.

If you’re looking to unfollow multiple TikTok users, the best way to find them will be to head to your own profile and press the “following” count on your page.
