JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Ray Fisher Teases Cyborg’s Big Screen Future And Reveals Whether He’s Seen The Snyder Cut

Image

We recently delved into the fact that the solo Cyborg movie was supposed to be released this weekend after being announced in 2014, and the character’s big screen future now remains as uncertain as it has been since Justice League arrived in theaters. While there have been rumblings about an appearance in The Flash, it sounds like actor Ray Fisher knows something we don’t!

During a recent Twitch stream, Fisher teased fans by saying, “I know there are plans in the works. How privy am I to those plans? I cannot say.” Could it be that the door is still open to a team-up between the Scarlet Speedster and Cyborg?

You have to believe it’s possible, but it feels like nothing is ever set in stone with the DCEU!

When talk turned to Zack Snyder’s “Snyder Cut” of Justice League, Fisher admitted that he hasn’t seen that fabled version of the DC Comics adaptation, but he knows that it does indeed exist!

“Timing-wise, I don’t think things have really worked out,” Fisher said about why he’s never been able to watch it. “There was one point in time where I was supposed to watch it, but some stuff came up and unfortunately it was not an option for me. Who knows? I might see it soon.”

Snyder and Fisher remain supportive of each other on social media, so chances are the door is open to him getting to see Cyborg’s original story arc for himself somewhere down the line. Now, we just have to continue hoping we’ll receive a similar opportunity in the not too distant future!

BLACK WIDOW: Kevin Feige Says The Movie Will Fill In Some Of The Gaps In The Infinity Saga

Image

Black Widow was recently delayed due to COVID-19 concerns, and the movie is now set to be released in Eternals‘ November slot. That’s obviously disappointing, but it’s good that it finally has a release date, and we now just have to hope that it’s able to meet it as planned despite current world events.

During an interview with Total Film Magazine (via Screen Rant), Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige dropped more hints about what fans can expect from the first Phase 4 movie, and pointed to it filling in some gaps in the Infinity Saga’s storied history…specifically those between films!

Acknowledging that they have “hinted at [Natasha Romanoff’s backstory] throughout all the other films,” he promised that “we approach it in a completely unexpected way” in Black Widow. He even explained that, “She’s been up to a lot all along – in between when we see her in the other movies – some of which will be surprising to people.”

It’s no secret that Black Widow takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, but it sounds like those won’t be the only movies this one revisits.

The events surrounding Iron Man 2 seem likely, of course, but Black Widow must have also done a lot in the time between Captain America: The Winter Soldier (where she exposed many of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s secrets to the world) and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It seems we’ll just have to wait and see for now.

Original DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Director May Have Met With Natasha Lyonne

Image

Due to “creative differences” with Marvel Studios, Scott Derrickson recently decided not to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Instead, Spider-Man helmer Sam Raimi is taking charge of the Sorcerer Supreme’s next solo adventure, but one of Derrickson’s ideas might have been revealed!

In the Tweet below, he drops some major hints about meeting with actress Natasha Lyonne about “the multiverse,” and something tells us the plan was for her to potentially take on the role of Clea.

A female Nightmare might have also been interesting for the Orange is the New Black and Russian Doll star, but now Derrickson is no longer attached to the Doctor Strange sequel, chances are Marvel Studios and Raimi will head in a different direction when it comes to the casting process.

Lyonne is a real talent, however, and adding the eclectic actress to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s hallowed halls would have been no bad thing. In the Multiverse of Madness is thought to be undergoing a rewrite since Raimi boarded the project, so we don’t even know how many of Derrickson’s ideas will be left on the cutting room floor by Kevin Feige by next November!

Quentin Tarantino Reveals Why He Never Made His LUKE CAGE Movie Starring Laurence Fishburne

Image

As you may have heard, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino was once considering directing a Luke Cage movie. Based on the classic Hero for Hire comic books, it likely would have been inspired by blaxploitation movies similar to Jackie Brown, but it never came to pass. Now, the director has expanded on his decision not to make it, and it has nothing to do with any sort of creative issues.

During a recent conversation with Amy Schumer, Tarantino explained that rather than clashing with Marvel Comics or anything like that, it was his friends who ended up talking him out of it!

“All my friends were like, ‘No, no, no, man, it’s got to be Wesley Snipes,’” Tarantino said, explaining that they disagreed with his casting choice of Ant-Man and The Wasp star Laurence Fishburne. “And I go, ‘Well look, I like Wesley Snipes, but I mean, Larry Fishburne is practically Marlon Brando. I mean, I think ‘Fish’ is the man.’”

To give you some context of how long ago these discussions took place, the director added that his Luke Cage idea came between Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Ultimately, his friends believed that Snipes had the better physique, not to mention the required star power.

Ultimately, Tarantino could only see Fishburne as Luke Cage, but after his friends convinced him otherwise, it seems he just gave up on the project altogether, and that’s why it didn’t happen.

There’s no denying that it’s interesting to think about what might have been, though…

BIRDS OF PREY Director Cathy Yan Has Plans For A Sequel Exploring Harley Quinn’s Relationship With Poison Ivy

Image

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey didn’t make the biggest of impacts at the box office, but as it now looks to find new life on VOD platforms, director Cathy Yan has told The Wrap that she already has an idea for a sequel should it happen. It’s obviously very early days on that front, but this is something bound to get comic book fans excited.

“I would love to see Poison Ivy and I would certainly love to see the relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy,” the filmmaker told the trade, explaining that their romance would be a big part of the follow-up. We’re not sure where that leads the Birds of Prey, of course, but those are characters who will presumably headline their own spinoff somewhere down the line.

Asked whether she thinks a sequel revolving around Harley Quinn will actually happen, Yan added: “I don’t know — I think people aren’t ready to let go of Harley Quinn quite yet and you know, Margot I don’t think is ready to let go of Harley Quinn yet either, so… hopefully.”

The character is, of course, set to appear in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, so we are going to see more of her before too long. Given the somewhat standalone nature of the DC Extended Universe these days, though, it’s doubtful that the return of Task Force X to the big screen will do much to set the stage for whatever Warner Bros. has planned next for Harley Quinn.

It would be no bad thing to see Yan get the chance to explore Harley’s budding romance with Ivy, though, and we’ll just have to keep our fingers cross that happens somewhere down the line.

VEI EXCLUSIVE Interview: Chatting With Artist And Co-Creator Karl Johnnson About The Graphic Novel

Image

Fans of Norse Mythology and comic books will find the perfect combination with Insight Editions’ Vei Volume 1 and 2. Featuring twists on popular characters such as Odin, Thor, Freyja, and Loki while following the denizens of Jotunheim.

The plot of the book centers around a fierce female warrior named Vei who has giant’s blood in her veins and hails from Jotunheim. There are also supporting characters such as a Nord and an interesting androgynous version of Loki who winds up being very important to the story.

We recently shared an exclusive interview with writer and creator Sara B. Elfgren, and now we have been given to the opportunity to chat with Karl Johnnson, the writer and co-creator of Vei. Johnnson shared plenty of interesting facts and information that fans of the graphic novels are going to love.

Joe: Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us. Your art is so gorgeous it feels like a crime to pull you away from it for anything else! Let’s start by asking what is it that made you hop on board with Vei?

Karl Johnnson: Thank you so much! For many years I had an idea that I wanted to make a story set in Jotunheim. Vei was a story I arrived at through a conversation with Sara, before she was involved as a writer of the project.

Joe: Is Norse Mythology something that has always interested you or is it something that you had to familiarize yourself with once you began to work on Vei?

Karl Johnnson: As a Swede, I grew up with it. I learned about it in school, and there were books about it in my home. I loved, and still love, myths from all over the world, but there is something special about stories that are connected to the place where you live. When my family went to the Stockholm archipelago in the summers, I imagined Viking ships sailing between the islands. I associated the Æsir with a certain atmosphere that was warm and exhilirating. They are a fun bunch. They are more hands-on in their in adventures than say the Greek gods. I deepened my knowledge about Norse mythology when we worked on Vei. Sara and I explored it together, it was a fantastic journey.

Joe: Given the nature of the book there are many races and species showcased in both volumes which allows you to really express yourself. Does this make it easier to lend your own unique artistic signature to the story?

Karl Johnnson: I had the character design for the Jotun ready since many years. I wanted them to look like forgotten gods, powerful, animalistic and beautiful, like something out of ancient Babylon. Many of the creatures had to be invented (or re-invented) for the story, and Sara and I hade a great time creating them together. The troll for example was inspired by a tapir, and the forest álfr were inspired by axolotl. I love to draw monsters and Vei is a creature feature.

Joe: Which of the characters was your favorite to bring to life in the pages of Vei volume 1 and 2?

Karl Johnnson: Loki, without a doubt. I love drawing characters with expressive body language and a flair for the dramatic. Veidar is the runner-up. He’s so spectacular and handsome. But I did grow to hate drawing his skull necklace. That design was one of my most short-sighted decisions I’ve made as a comic book artist. All those skulls every time he’s in a panel! But now it’s done and it looks great! Of course, I loved to draw Vei and Dal, they became like old friends, and the more I drew them, the better the they looked. Sól is another favorite. She is also very expressive, and there’s something funny and moving about her being this 40 meter, thousand year old, teenager.

Joe: Can you see yourself working another Norse Mythology-related project in the future?

Karl Johnnson: I would love to. The more you do something, the more you learn about it. When I started out working on Vei, I didn’t look too hard on historical viking artifacts. I wanted the designs to have a pulpy fantasy vibe inspired by different cultures of the ancient world. But while working on the comic I learned so much about clothing, armour, weapons and the way to use them, about architecture and the very world the people of the Viking age inhabited. I still don’t feel that fantasy has to be ”historically accurate”. But I’d love to bring my acquired knowledge to a new project.

Joe: Are there any fun facts or trivia you can share with us about Vei?

Karl Johnnson: Sure! The beginning of volume 1, when Vei is floating in the ocean and is picked up by vikings, is inspired by the beginning of Robert E. Howard’s short story Pool of the black one. In this story, Conan is floating in the ocean, and is picked up by a pirate ship searching for a mythical island.

Some of the faces of the vikings in volume one are based on some of the biggest jerks I’ve ever met. I knew they would have a rough end in the comic. Yeah, I know it’s pretty twisted.

The French animated movie The Fantastic planet from 1973 was a huge inspiration for me. It’s a bout a planet where blue giant aliens keep humans as pets.

The costume that Freyja is wearing at the end of volume 2 is a tribute to the wizard’s costume in the comic Yaxin the Faun by Man Arenas.

Joe: Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about Vei or any of your upcoming projects?

Karl Johnnson: I just hope the readers have a great experience with Vei. It’s a passion project, and it’s kind of a miracle that we managed to fulfill our vision. There’s no comic industry to speak of in Sweden, that’s why there are so few comics projects of this size coming out of our country. Right now I’m working on a sci-fi project for children that is called Heirs to Empire. We don’t have an English language publisher yet, but I hope it will reach your shores eventually. Keep your eyes peeled! I just want to say thank you to all our readers. You truly are the most wonderful people.

What do you think of these comments from co-creator and artist Karl Johnnson? If you haven’t had a chance to read Vei yet, take a look at the summary below!

She trained her whole life to become the strongest warrior of Jotunheim, to become the beloved champion of her gods. But when the time came to finally prove her strength, Vei was cast into the sea by the very god she fought for.

Rescued by a Viking ship, Vei returns to Jotunheim, home of the legendary giants. There she finds herself caught in the Meistarileikir, a bloody game between the humans, the giants, and the gods of Asgard that will determine who will have the right to rule the land of Midgard. Having lost the confidence of her own god, Vei must take her place in the Meistarileikir and fight not only for the control of Midgard, but for her very life, in this epic battle against daring warriors, fearsome monsters, and even the gods themselves.

A bestseller in Sweden, Vei Vol. 1 weaves together an incredible tale that pits man against God and God against God in an outstanding Hunger Games meets Norse mythology graphic novel.

Vei Vol. 1 is currently available to purchase at a retailer near you, or if you prefer to pick it up online you can do so here for a ticket price of $24.99.

Marvel’s Release Date Shakeup Will Result In The Longest Gap Between MCU Movies In A Decade

Image

We had all been waiting for some kind of announcement relating to the status of Marvel’s upcoming movie slate amid the coronavirus delays, and yesterday we finally got confirmation of that big release date shakeup most of us anticipated.

Black Widow will take Eternals‘ original date of November 6 2020, moving that movie forward to February 12, 2021, kicking off a chain reaction that pushes each successive film into a previously occupied spot. It’s an unprecedented move and one that will likely have lasting ramifications for this shared world long past 2021.

In Richard Newby’s extensive report on these shakeups, he points out something very interesting.

The last Marvel movie to hit the big screen was Spider-Man: Far From Home last July, which means that when Widow arrives in theaters later this year, it’ll mark the longest amount of time audiences have gone without an MCU entry since the gap between 2008’s The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 in 2010.

This situation is obviously far from ideal, but we will come out the other end eventually, and there will be a lot of very exciting movies to catch up on when we do.

How have you guys been handling quarantine? Let us know in the comments.
