AQUAMAN 2 Writer Discusses Inspiration For The Sequel And Where THE TRENCH Fits Into The DCEU

Image

With COVID-19 taking over, well, everything, we’re seeing more filmmakers using social media to interact with fans. Last night, Aquaman writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick held an impromptu Q&A, and shed some light on plans for the sequel which is coming our way in 2022.

Asked if there’s any one storyline the movie will be based on, the writer pointed out that fans will be better off turning to the Silver Age comic books featuring the villainous Black Manta.

“We’re not taking any one particular comic book story and adapting it,” he confirmed, “but if you want to know the vibe we’re going for, pick up pretty much any Silver Age story featuring Black Manta.” It’s been common knowledge for a while now that the amazing Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will return as Aquaman 2‘s lead villain, but that mention of the Silver Age is definitely noteworthy.

He was also asked for an update on the screenplay, and noted, “It’s going good! I’m texting with [James Wan] about the draft of the script right now — I think you’re gonna dig it!”

As for the planned spinoff revolving around The Trench, Johnson-McGoldrick revealed that while the plan is for it to be set between the events of Aquaman and Aquaman 2, nothing is set in stone, and it definitely sounds like it’s still early days for the highly anticipated project.

“Theoretically, it takes place between 1 and 2. But some pieces of this is still being worked out.”

While productions in Hollywood have hit a standstill, Aquaman 2 looks likely to meet its planned release date, and given how great the first instalment was, it’s hard not to be excited about this one.

JUSTICE LEAGUE MORTAL Concept Art Reveals A Cool New Take On The Batcave And Batcomputer

Image

The director behind the upcoming Miller’s Justice League Mortal documentary, Ryan Unicomb, has shared more concept art from the unmade DC Comics adaptation, this time focusing on the Batcave.

As you can see, Armie Hammer’s Dark Knight stands in front of the Batcomputer in a rather grounded take on this iconic location. However, while there’s no giant coin or dinosaur, it is pretty atmospheric, and this would have been very cool to see on the big screen. Look closely, and you’ll notice that Alfred Pennyworth appears to be approaching Gotham City’s Caped Crusader.

Recently, Unicomb also shared a piece of artwork depicting the cowl that Batman would have donned in Justice League Mortal, a film originally set to be released in 2008 or 2009.

An impressive cast was assembled, but the writers strike and some budgetary issues led to Warner Bros. deciding to prioritise solo films like The Dark Knight and Green Lantern. A Justice League movie wouldn’t arrive until 2017’s effort, well, we all know how that turned out!

What do you guys think about this artwork?

Rosario Dawson’s THE MANDALORIAN Role Could Lead to An Ahsoka Tano Spinoff Series

Image

Yesterday, we got word that Rosario Dawson had joined the cast of The Mandalorian Season 2 as none other than Ahsoka Tano, and now some new details have come to light.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the news, and suggested that Dawson’s role could lead to a spinoff show for the fan-favorite Jedi. It’s only the briefest of hints, but it sounds like Dawson’s episode(s) could serve as a backdoor pilot for an eventual Ahsoka Tano series. Deadline‘s report mentions that Dawson will not be a series regular.

Ahsoka was introduced in The Clone Wars animated series as Anakin Skywalker’s Jedi apprentice, before returning as a major supporting player in Star Wars Rebels. Fans have been clamoring for a live-action take on the character for many years.

How Tano will be integrated into the plot remains to be seen, but there’s a decent chance it’ll have something to do with the Darksaber we saw Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) wield in the Season 1 finale. That blade was the property of Sabine Wren in Rebels, and in the series finale of that show Aksoka joined forces with Wren to track down Ezra Bridger. Sabine also happens to be a Mandalorian, and there’s speculation that she may feature alongside the Jedi.

Are you guys looking forward to seeing Ahsoka in live-action? What do you think about Dawson’s casting? Let us know in the comments.

BLACK WIDOW Could Open On One Of The Following Dates (If It Opens This Year At All); Plus Badass New Stills

Image

Marvel’s Black Widow, which was widely expected to be one of this year’s biggest films, has unfortunately been delayed indefinitely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With no new release date in sight, Deadline shared a report earlier this week which speculated on a few dates Disney may ultimately decide to move the Marvel Studios blockbuster.

With the Scarlett Johansson-starrer being a huge priority for the studio, the trade believes that Disney will ultimately end up moving the film to either July 3rd (pushing back 20th Century Studios’ Free Guy), July 24th (pushing back Disney’s Jungle Cruise) or, in an absolute worst case scenario, to November 6th (pushing Marvel’s The Eternals to 2021).

However, considering everything going on and the very fluid nature of the news cycle, everything about the upcoming theatrical release calendar is subject to change at any given moment. Also, with theaters still shutdown worldwide and the pandemic showing no sign of slowing down stateside, it seems unlikely Disney will rush one of their biggest tentpoles into theaters until the world reattains at least some level of normalcy.

Check out two new stills featuring Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) and Yelena (Florence Pugh) below.

Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome; Lore) directed the long-awaited standalone, and in addition to Johansson (Avengers: Endgame; Jojo Rabbit), the film’s ensemble cast will introduce several new characters into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe, including, but not limited to, Academy Award-nominee Florence Pugh (Little WomenFighting with My Family) as Yelena Belova, 2x Primetime Emmy-nominee David Harbour (Stranger Things; Hellboy) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian and Academy Award-winner Rachel Weisz (The Favourite; The Mummy) as Melina Vostokoff.

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz is Melina. Directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige, “Black Widow”—the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—hits U.S. theaters on May 1, 2020.

Black Widow features:
Director: Cate Shortland
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow
Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow
David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian
Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff/Black Widow
O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason
William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross
Ray Winstone in an undisclosed role
Olivier Richters in an undisclosed role
TBD as Taskmaster

Black Widow has been delayed indefinitely.

WONDER WOMAN 1984: Warner Bros. Denies Plans To Scrap The Sequel’s Theatrical Release

Image

Despite reports that Wonder Woman 1984 could end up skipping theaters and heading straight to Digital or a streaming service like HBO Max, Warner Bros. is now rushing to deny that we won’t see the sequel on the big screen. According to Indie Wire, the studio has “confirmed” that the sequel will indeed receive a full theatrical run.

Now, before we get too ahead of ourselves here, it’s worth pointing out that The Wrap shared comments denying that it was the plan, and only said that it was something the studio is considering. While it may not be on the table right now, if theaters are still closed for the foreseeable future by June, then it could be that the studio comes to the conclusion that they have no other choice.

At the moment, Wonder Woman 1984 is still set to be released on June 5th, and if a change is coming, then we probably won’t find out for at least a few more weeks.

A non-theatrical release would be an extreme and unexpected move for a film as big as this one, but we’re living in strange times, and with everything from Onward to Bloodshot hitting Digital early over the next couple of weeks, Warner Bros. could end up making history.

The biggest question is whether Wonder Woman 1984 could possibly slip into 2021. It was originally due last year before being pushed back to this summer.

Honestly, we wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up not receiving a theatrical release, but we’ll have to wait and see for now. What do you guys think could happen? Let us know your thoughts down below!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Responds To Vin Diesel’s Recent “Alpha Groot” Comments

Image

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has been fielding questions about Vol. 3 on Twitter today, and the filmmaker has been clearing up some big rumours. For starters, he’s clarified who has actually read the screenplay for the film he’ll start working on once he’s done with The Suicide Squad.

As you can see below, the director is still making some minor alterations to the script, something which is no great surprise now it’s coming later than expected (and after Thor: Love and Thunder).

Gunn has also weighed in on those recent comments from Bloodshot star Vin Diesel about Vol. 3 introducing “Alplha Groot.” Since then, fans have been wildly speculating about what that means, but the writer and director has confirmed that the actor hasn’t read the screenplay (and that he has no idea what he was referring to when it comes to the sentient tree’s future in the MCU).

It’s obvious that Groot will continue to evolve, and our first signs of that will more than likely come when the Guardians reportedly return in Taika Waititi’s next Thor movie. However, it’s Gunn who will take charge of whatever comes next for the fan-favourite hero, and that’s exciting for a lot of reasons.

Check out his Tweets below, and stay tuned for more updates on the threequel!

Obviously @karengillan has, as she’s been public about it. Along with her, a couple of actors, a few people from Marvel, one other Marvel director, and my girlfriend. BUT it’s still changing (slightly) so only I have read the most recent draft. https://t.co/4pVqWNKOdc

— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) March 20, 2020

Haha no idea. Maybe he just means the most awesome Groot ever? https://t.co/B9XiE8UupB

— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) March 20, 2020

I think he was talking about what he imagined the future Groot to be (he hasn’t read the script). And, yes, they’re a different being. https://t.co/ty3vJOKTxW
