Right now, The New Mutants still has an August 28th release date, though it’s still somewhat difficult to imagine that happening when not even Tenet is arriving on the big screen until early September. Last week, fans noticed that some international marketing teams had replaced “August 28th” with “Coming Soon,” and there’s now evidence of further delays. 

Two theater chains in Thailand are now advertising a September 3rd release, as are Russia and Denmark. If the date sounds familiar, it’s because the exact same one was used in the supposedly “fake” Australian TV spot which promoted a Disney+ debut on that exact same day. 

It’s an undeniably strange coincidence, but it could be exactly that. 

The New Mutants director Josh Boone recently explained that deals are signed beforehand with a movie like this that are meant to ensure a theatrical release, but perhaps Disney can have it play in some international locations and then put it on Disney+ at the same time (that would certainly be a unique move, and one which could test the waters for some of the studio’s other releases). 

There’s an investors call with Disney shareholders tomorrow, so it’s possible that plans for The New Mutants could be addressed then. However, most will be more interested in learning what COVID-19 means for bigger blockbusters like Mulan and this November’s Black Widow.

We recently learned that cameras were set to begin rolling on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings again after the Marvel movie became one of the first major productions to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, and we now have some footage of sets being constructed as filming resumes in Sydney, Australia.

7News has shared some helicopter shots of the massive set, with crews hard at work building what appears to be a Chinese temple and some of the houses in the surrounding village. There’s no sign of any cast member, unfortunately, but we may get a glimpse of some of the stars in the coming weeks as shooting continues.

In related news, Michelle Yeoh (Star Trek: Discovery, Crazy Rich Asians) has shared an Instagram post which many have taken as confirmation that she’s joined the cast of the martial arts adventure. We first reported on this back in January.

Yeoh had a small role as Aleta Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and while there’s always a chance she’ll play the same character in Shang-Chi, it seems unlikely. We still don’t know a whole lot about the plot, but it’s difficult to imagine it tying into the cosmic side of the MCU to any significant degree.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung, and is set to hit theaters on May 7, 2021.

When Disney decided to fire Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, it looked like Dave Bautista was going to leave the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor was furious about the way the filmmaker was treated, and had he not been busy with other projects, it appeared as if Bautista would make the leap to the DC Extended Universe for The Suicide Squad. 

Since then, Gunn has been re-hired, but last December, Bautista shared a photo outside the Warner Bros. studio lot with the caption, “It won’t come to you so get after it!! #DreamChaser.” 

At the time, we had no idea what he might be there for, but it appears as if he was lobbying for the role of Bane in The Batman! Asked on Twitter whether we could see him in Matt Reeves’ movie as that formidable bad guy, the pro wrestler turned actor responded, “Unfortunately it’s not. Tried my best.”

There’s no reason to believe that Bane will be in The Batman, as The Riddler and The Penguin appear to be the lead villains. With that in mind, it probably wasn’t anything personal as the studio is unlikely to have wanted to shoehorn in Bane just because Bautista wants the role.

Things could definitely change down the line, though, and there are other places Bane could appear!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will end after its current seventh season, and fans are understandably keen to know what might become of these characters. With Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige now in charge of Marvel Television, it seems likely that all the TV shows he had no creative involvement in will no longer be considered canon (if they ever were) to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One hero many viewers of the ABC series would like to see more of is Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson/Quake.

In an interview with Looper, the actress made it clear that she “definitely would” reprise the role should the opportunity present itself.

“I mean, I have such a soft spot for her. I started shooting the show when I was 20, and then I finished when I was 27. To get this time right now, in isolation, to kind of contemplate the past seven years and how much it’s meant to me — it hasn’t really hit me yet that the show is over, so it doesn’t really feel like I’m done playing her yet.”

“I think once the last episode airs and the show is really out of my life, I think that will be an interesting feeling,” Bennet continued. “But I can never say never. I mean, Coulson’s died like 800 times. I don’t think I realized when I first auditioned for the role how much this entire entity, how much this character, how much this universe and how much S.H.I.E.L.D. was going to be just a part of me for the rest of my life. I definitely would be open to playing her again.”

Adding that she hasn’t been contacted by Marvel Studios about returning as Quake, Bennet joked that fans could help make it a reality down the line. “[L]isten, ‘Coulson Lives’ started on Twitter, so who knows?”

It’s certainly possible we could see more of Quake at some point in the not too distant future, but Marvel Studios rebooting the character isn’t outside the realm of possibility. Bennet, meanwhile, is bound to land on her feet as she’s proven herself a talented actress over the past seven years.

The #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement remains as vocal as ever on social media, and one Suicide Squad fan recently gained quite a bit of attention for sharing a compelling theory about the 2016 release.

Sharing some photos from behind the scenes of the DC Comics adaptation, they pointed out a that a mysterious woman wearing a red dress in a scene with The Joker was completely cut from David Ayer’s movie. Believing that the Clown Prince of Crime may have kidnapped random girls and forced them to dress up as Harley Quinn, the Twitter user (whose theory can be found in full below) theorized that the villain later killed these stand-ins. 

Well, Ayer has now weighed in on this, and confirmed that the fan theory is indeed correct.

This adds another twisted element to The Joker, and it might have helped that weird scene – where he’s surrounded by guns and baby clothes – make a little more sense. Unfortunately, the relationship between him and Harley was somewhat watered down in Suicide Squad‘s theatrical cut.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently set to be released in theaters this October, but the entire plot of the sequel has already leaked online, and received something of a mixed response from those who have read it. Of course, a synopsis written from memory will never do an actual movie justice, so it will be interesting seeing what director Patty Jenkins delivers here. 

During an interview with German magazine Geek (via @DCMovieNews2), the filmmaker indicated that if she gets the opportunity to direct a Wonder Woman 3, it will likely be the last time she steps behind the camera to direct the Amazon Warrior’s big screen adventures. 

“[Wonder Woman 1984] gave me a chance to do a lot of things that I couldn’t accommodate in the first movie. I was so happy to tell the Wonder Woman origin story,” Jenkins explains. “It was almost her birth, but we really haven’t seen what she is capable of. It is exciting for me to show her at the peak of her strength.”

“But it is also very important that she fights an internal struggle: she is a Goddess and tries to help humanity. She is not only someone who fights evil, she tries to show bad people how to improve. It’s an interesting dilemma.”

“The next one [Wonder Woman 3] is probably my last Wonder Woman movie,” Jenkins added in regards to her future with the franchise, “so I have to put everything I want to show there. We have to think carefully.” It certainly sounds like the director has big plans for Diana Prince moving forward, and you have to believe that third movie would take place in the present day.
