THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME Review; “A Powerful, Moving Piece Of Storytelling”

Image

Based on Donald Ray Pollock’s novel of the same name, The Devil All The Time arrives on Netflix this Wednesday, and features a jaw-dropping cast of A-List talent which proves that, these days, you really can get that theatrical experience in the comfort of your own home. Set in rural Ohio and West Virginia, the film follows an eclectic group of characters from the end of World War II through to the dawn of the Vietnam War, with the stories of a despicable preacher (Robert Pattinson), two serial killers (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), a crooked sheriff with big aspirations (Sebastian Stan), and a young man with a tragic past (Tom Holland) the focus as their lives converge in unexpected and often sadistic ways.

With so many characters to put a spotlight on (Bill Skarsgård, Haley Bennett, and Mia Wasikowska all also play key roles), it’s inevitable that not all of them get the screentime they need for their respective stories to be told as effectively as they probably should have been. What led to that sheriff’s descent into corruption? Why do Carl Henderson and his wife travel the country killing men and photographing their corpses? There’s enough material here to draw your own conclusions, and we’re only ever really getting a glimpse into all their lives, but with Holland’s damaged Arvin Russell explored in such a satisfying way, it’s sometimes a little tricky to buy into the other leads to the same extent.

That aside, there’s a strong story at the heart of The Devil All The Time, but make no mistake about it, it doesn’t make for cheerful viewing. Arvin is perhaps the only truly good person here (outside of his step sister and the relatives who take him in), but his journey takes him to some unbelievably dark places, and the violence on display throughout the entire film is both unsettling and effectively used. However, if you’re a dog lover, be warned that there’s one hard-hitting moment, in particular, it will be tricky to unsee.

Holland is excellent, showcasing his range in a way that a Spider-Man movie can’t. As events around him escalate, we’re sucked into what he’s going through in a way it’s impossible to look away from, and he remains as likeable a presence on screen here as when he’s decked out in spandex. Pattinson’s performance is in equal parts brilliant and weird, and while he initially feels like a strange choice for the character he’s playing, it all makes sense when his true nature is revealed. Ultimately, it’s those two that steal the show, but there’s not a bad performance to be found in The Devil All The Time, and a theatrical release could help the two Brits receive some much-deserve awards recognition next year. Unfortunately, Stan is somewhat underused, but that’s part and parcel of his character being woefully underwritten and not a knock on his talent. Eliza Scanlen’s performance also stands out in a movie where female characters are perhaps too often victims, while Harry Potter‘s Harry Melling is unrecognisable and brilliant as a deluded preacher.

Director Antonio Campos does a superb job of bringing Pollock’s novel to life, and the way these stories intersect is extremely clever. Things unfold in a way that’s in equal parts exciting and easy to follow (in a lesser filmmaker’s hands, events could have very easily become convoluted and muddled), and it’s never not fascinating to explore this world. The rural setting and often despicable people who inhabit it look undeniably superb on film, and there are enough twists and unexpected, haunting moments to keep fans of psychological thrillers hooked.

The Devil All The Time is a powerful, moving piece of storytelling, bolstered with incredible performances that make it easy to overlook the odd underwritten character and material that’s occasionally too heavy hitting and grim.

JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Ray Fisher Shares More Damning Allegations About Warner Bros.’ Investigation

Image

Justice League star Ray Fisher shocked the world when he accused reshoots director Joss Whedon and producers Geoff Johns and Jon Berg of abusive and unprofessional behaviour on the set of the movie. Since then, he’s been dropping the odd extra detail here and there, but is choosing his words carefully until he’s legally able to speak openly and freely.

Warner Bros. is now conducting an investigation through an independent firm, but it doesn’t sound like it’s going particularly well, as Fisher argued that the studio tried to discredit him when they claimed he had refused to speak to that team (in reality, it seems he’s been trying to reach out to them).

Now, the actor is alleging that Warner Bros. is attempting to create a “false narrative” by only speaking to certain people, and ignoring those who actually want to talk about their experiences.

Interestingly, Fisher even claims to have received an apology from an “implicated individual,” meaning he’s likely heard from Whedon, Johns, or Berg at some point. Needless to say, this situation is getting messier, and we still don’t know what really happened on the set of Justice League

However, it does seem like that could soon change. We’ll keep you updated.

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER Star Sebastian Stan Shares Socially Distanced New Set Photo

Image

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has finally resumed shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, and it seems Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are back on set as the title characters.

As you can see below, the latter has shared a socially distanced set photo with his co-star, and they’re both in costume as their respective characters. It’s unclear whether the Disney+ TV series is indeed returning to the Czech Republic to finish off the scenes that were being shot when COVID-19 starting closing down productions, but it has been reported that’s the case.

Regardless, all fans really care about is getting to see The Falcon and The Winter Soldier as soon as possible. Originally, it was set to arrive in August, but Marvel Studios has yet to reveal a new premiere date…likely so they don’t end up having to disappoint fans again if further delays happen!

There’s no reason to assume we won’t see the show before 2020 is over, but the fact Stan points out how long he and Mackie have now been working on the series reiterates just how problematic the pandemic has been for Marvel Studios thus far (their entire Phase 4 slate has been postponed).

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE SNYDER CUT’s Official Title May Have Been Revealed Thanks To New DC FanDome Wallpapers

Image

There’s a lot of confusion surrounding the title of the version of Justice League coming to HBO Max next year, and Warner Bros. really isn’t helping with that! The theatrical version of Justice League was, of course, just “Justice League,” but it’s no secret that Zack Snyder would like his director’s cut to be called Zack Sndyer’s Justice League

Unfortunately, he’s hinted that legal problems could pose a problem with that, hence why no one was really surprised when DC FanDome appeared to confirm that it will be titled Justice League: The Snyder Cut. Now, though, there’s another interesting wrinkle to this ongoing story.

Wallpapers released by Warner Bros. during DC FanDome yesterday are labelled simply Justice League Director’s Cut. Could that be the final, official title for the highly anticipated HBO Max release?

At this point, we probably shouldn’t bank on it, as it does feel a little like it’s a work in progress! Why we haven’t received a truly, 100% official title for Justice League is hard to say, but there’s a chance the studio is indeed working on getting the one Snyder wants: Zack Snyder’s Justice League

Time will tell, but a firm premiere date would definitely be welcome news for fans right now!

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER Set Video Reveals U.S. Agent’s Brutal Fighting Style As Captain America

Image

Cameras are once again rolling on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier in Atlanta, Georgia, and another video from the set of the Disney+ TV series has now found its way online. As you can see below, it shows Wyatt Russell’s John Walker/Captain America as he battles two unknown female villains (?).

Watching this, it’s apparent that U.S. Agent’s fighting style is much different to what we saw from Steve Rogers as he smashes his shield into the face of his foes and starts choking one of them.

This brutal style is to be expected from the unhinged Walker, and chances are he’s just as dangerous in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he is in the comic books. Right now, we have no idea whether this U.S. Agent will be a full-blown villain or someone who goes on to be an anti-hero.

Either way, his “Captain America” is clearly going to bring a very different feel to this shared world, and our first proper look at him in action in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier can’t get here soon enough. When that will happen is hard to say, especially with no first premiere date in place right now.
