LOKI And WANDAVISION Have Also Been Put On A Two-Week Hiatus Due To Coronavirus Pandemic

Image

Unsurprisingly, Variety has now confirmed that production on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and WandaVision has been put on hold due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

Disney made the decision to hit the pause button on its Disney+ TV shows yesterday, and it’s said that those currently in the pre-production phases will continue being worked on “remotely.” That bodes well for their future, but there’s still a lot of uncertainty surrounding what Hollywood will do next depending on how bad things get with this pandemic.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was the first to delay production earlier this week due to having to leave Prague. Loki has been filming in Atlanta, while it’s thought that work on WandaVision has pretty much been completed, so it’s likely in-studio scenes which have now been put on hold.

This news comes shortly after Disney decided to suspend production on all its live-action films, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and The Little Mermaid

As of right now, we have no idea whether this is going to lead to any delays, but WandaVision isn’t set to hit Disney+ until November, and Loki is scheduled for 2021. As for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, that’s coming our way this August, but it’s entirely possible it will be delayed if these delays continue posing a problem for Hollywood productions.

Stay tuned for updates as we have them!

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER Is Reportedly The Latest Production To Take A Two-Week Hiatus

Image

As is quickly becoming clear, Hollywood is closing down one production at a time thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic. While there have been rumblings that work will continue on Loki as planned this Monday, a Facebook post by Catrett Locke Casting points to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier now taking a two-week hiatus until the end of March.

In their post, the company shares a list of TV shows which have been put on hold, and “Tag Team” is among them. For those of you who may not realise, that’s the production title for the Marvel Studios TV series. “Architect” is Loki‘s working title, and there’s currently no mention of that anywhere.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was forced to leave Prague last week due to the spread of Coronavirus, and it’s thought that Marvel Studios was unable to shoot everything they needed to.

Whether this will delay the Disney+ series’ planned premiere on the streaming service is hard to say, but it’s certainly possible depending on how things play out over the coming months. As of right now, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been put on hold, but luckily for Disney, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and other Marvel TV shows don’t shoot until the summer.

Hollywood is definitely in chaos at the moment thanks to this pandemic, but the health of those working on these big and small screen projects is understandably a priority for studios right now.

We’ll share more updates as they continue coming in.

UPDATE: It now appears as if Loki has been postponed for an undisclosed amount of time based on an updated version of this Facebook post.

To check out some huge Black Widow reveals from the latest
issue of Entertainment Weekly, hit the “Next” button below!

Why Kevin Feige Didn’t Want A Straightforward Origin Story

Widow1

Previous MCU movies have dropped some big hints about Natasha’s past, with references or flashbacks to her first meeting with Hawkeye in Budapest and the time she spent in the Red Room. With that in mind, many fans expected Black Widow to be a straightforward origin story.

Instead, it will be set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, a surprising move which means we won’t get to visit the hero’s early years.

“A prequel that simply filled in the blanks of things you already know is not very exciting,” Feige argues. “How does she get her Widow stingers for the first time? How did she learn to do a flip? That doesn’t matter.” It’s a valid point, but many fans were hoping to see all that here!

Natasha Romanoff’s “Family”

Guardian

In the trailers for Black Widow, characters like Melina, Alexei, and Yelena have been described as Natasha’s mother, father, and sister. Avengers: Endgame revealed that she never actually even knew her father’s name, so you probably won’t be surprised to learn that they’re not her real family.

Instead, the site reveals that this foursome went undercover as a family when Natasha was just a child, so they have a lot of history together. Melina Vostokoff is described as being “mysterious” and someone else who trained as Widow, while Yelena Belova is another Red Room alum who Natasha now views as an “estranged little sister.”

Finally, there’s David Habour’s Red Guardian, Russia’s answer to Captain America. “I thought it would be a straightforward action movie,” the actor admits, “and then it wound up being a real character study of a dysfunctional family.”

Scarlett Johansson’s Reaction To That Age Of Ultron Scene

Bruce-Nat

Joss Whedon delved into Black Widow’s Red Room history in Avengers: Age of Ultron when he introduced a romantic element to Natasha’s relationship with Bruce Banner.

That alone was pretty controversial, but something which really angered a lot of fans was the filmmaker’s decision to reveal that the hero had been forced to undergo sterilization years earlier and seemingly viewed herself as a monster as a result. Johansson didn’t have much to say about that, but pointed out that filming those scenes required some movie magic.

“[It was] ironic because I was also really pregnant at the time,” the actress reveals with a laugh.

Why Black Widow Wasn’t Part Of The Infinity Saga

Widow-2

It’s definitely surprising that Black Widow is the movie Marvel Studios has chosen to kick off Phase 4 as Avengers: Endgame set the stage for whole new era of storytelling. However, there’s a good reason why Feige decided against including this spinoff in the series now known as the “Infinity Saga.”

Johansson reveals that she and Feige first discussed the possibility of a Black Widow movie during the press tour for The Avengers as just “a tiny speck on an idea,” and the Marvel Studios President ultimately decided to prioritise Natasha’s story as part of the wider MCU during that period.

“We had been planning the conclusion for the Infinity Saga for the past five or six years, and Natasha’s journey within those films took the priority,” he explains. “The notion of breaking out for a stand-alone film that takes place in the past, for a character that we already knew and were already following, didn’t feel right.”

The MCU’s Female-Led Future

Cpt-Marvel

When The Avengers was released in 2012, Black Widow was the MCU’s only female Avenger. Things have changed a lot since then, of course, and the likes of Captain Marvel, Okoye, and the Scarlet Witch have since assembled alongside the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

As a result, a female-led superhero movie is no longer a novelty, and Johansson sees that as a good thing. “For anyone who said to me, ‘Oh, this [Black Widow film] should’ve happened five or 10 years ago,’ I’m like, it would not have been as substantial. We just would not have been able to do it. This film is happening now as a result of what’s going on in the zeitgeist, and I think it’s pretty cool.”

The actress believes that just casting female heroes isn’t enough; instead, distinctly female stories should be a pritority (once being told that Black Widow “could be like Bourne, but with a woman” didn’t sit well with her). “I think this character’s strength really lies in her vulnerability and her acceptance of that. She has emotional intelligence that has allowed her to survive without any real superpowers.”

“She’s someone who is a problem-solver. She’s a pragmatic person. I think a lot of those qualities are inherently female.”

Why Cate Shortland Decided To Direct Black Widow

Wido2

Cate Shortland didn’t have any real interest in directing superhero movies until Black Widow came along, but it sounds like Johansson managed to win her over. “We just bonded over stories about trust and about intimacy and about women surviving,” the filmmaker reveals.

“You didn’t have to be a superhero to identify with a woman who has had a really tough childhood and has survived and has a huge heart and helps other people,” Shortland continues.

Interestingly, Shortland doesn’t sound overly impressed by how Black Widow has previously been portrayed in the MCU. “When I looked at the past films, there’s a lot of sitting outside of the character, so that she is seen and kind of objectified. Oftentimes we don’t really get to see who she is when she’s by herself — who she is when she takes off the action-hero facade.”

How Black Widow Informs The Events Of Avengers: Endgame

Wndgame-Wido

The magazine doesn’t exactly shed a lot of light on Black Widow‘s plot, but notes that Natasha ends up being drawn into a Red Room-related conspiracy which forces the hero reexamine both her history and past trauma (the latest trailer pointed to her wanting to close down the program which transformed her into a spy once and for all).

“I thought it was interesting to explore this part of her life before she rejoins the Avengers, before she makes that ultimate sacrifice,” Johansson explains. “How does she become this full person from all these broken pieces?”

There’s certainly been something of a mixed response over the decision to set Black Widow between Civil War and Infinity War, especially when there’s a desire among fans to dive into her early years. With any luck, we will get to see her meet the likes of Hawkeye and The Winter Soldier for the first time, but time will tell on that front.

Black Widow’s MCU Legacy

Wido1

We all know how Natasha’s story ends, and with Black Widow likely to be a one-off adventure for the fallen Avenger, what does Johansson hope will be the hero’s legacy moving forward?

“I hope that this film continues pushing that boundary, so that we can actually have more female superheroes who are inherently female, and aren’t just Batman in heels or whatever.”

The future certainly looks bright for female superheroes on the big screen, and there’s no denying that Johansson and her take on Black Widow have been a big part of making that happen.

What The Movie Means To Scarlett Johansson

Wido

“This film is very much a result of that journey, my own personal journey,” Johansson says of the decade she’s spent playing this character. “I feel that I probably wasn’t as willing or able to go to the kind of uncomfortable, embarrassing, ugly places before. I think it’s just as you get older, you trust yourself more.”

Despite spending years being badgered about a Black Widow solo movie, the actress admits that she was privately unsure whether that was something she even wanted to happen.

“I was like, I think I’m good,” she admits. “If we [were] going to do this, it had to be creatively fulfilling. I’ve been working for such a long time, and I have to feel like I’m challenged. I don’t want to do the same thing that I’d already done before.”

Scarlett Johansson’s Avengers: Endgame Concern

Wndgame-Wido2

As we’ve alluded to a few times here, Black Widow made the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame when she leapt off that cliff on Vormir to her death to secure the Soul Stone for Hawkeye.

Johansson alluded to an earlier version of the scene which was a lot less personal and featured Thanos’ army chasing the heroes down and forcing Natasha to end her life in the process. However, the actress was concerned that such a dark scene would have upset a lot of younger moviegoers.

“I was thinking, ‘Parents will never forgive us for how these creatures look,'” she said, describing them as an “army of Dementor-type creatures.” As for why it was later reshot by the Russos, Johansson added: “We wanted to leave [the audience] with the weight of that loss and the shock of it.”

THE BATMAN Production Halted In The UK By Warner Bros. Over Coronavirus Concerns

Image

It’s been confirmed today that Warner Bros. has decided to stop production on The Batman

While there were plans in place for the movie to move from London to Liverpool in an effort to protect those working on the DC Comics adaptation, the ongoing concerns surrounding the Coronavirus mean that a two-week hiatus has been decided as the best course of action.

This is pretty much exactly what every other major studio has decided to do, and the situation will more than likely be reassessed at the end of March. However, considering the fact things are only expected to get worse in the UK (it’s thought they’re about two to four weeks away from where Italy is right now), there’s a chance The Batman could ultimately be heavily impacted by the pandemic.

“Warner Bros. Pictures feature production of The Batman will be on a two-week hiatus starting today,” reads an official statement from Warner Bros. “The studio will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Variety’s Justin Kroll notes that, “Sources telling me MATRIX still in production as majority of shoot is in soundstage in Berlin where they are taking precautions while KING RICHARD shoot has already been reworked because of bad weather in Los Angeles.” There’s no word on the next Fantastic Beasts movie, but seeing as it was set to start shooting in the UK on Monday, chances are it too will be delayed.

As we mentioned above, it’s seemingly become the norm for productions to go on hiatus until the end of the month, but depending on how bad things get with this pandemic, that could last longer.

We’ll be sure to keep you guys updated as we learn more over the coming days and weeks.

This Year’s Razzie Awards Have Been Postponed/Possibly Canceled Thanks To Coronavirus Pandemic

Image

The Razzie Awards honor the worst that Hollywood has to offer, and was scheduled to take place in the Barnsdall Theatre in Los Angeles tonight. However, despite previous protestations that the show would go on, John Wilson, the co-founder of the awards, has confirmed that the event is now either “canceled/postponed.”

“The Mayor of Los Angeles shut down all city-owned venues where more than 50 people could gather, including our site, The Barnsdall Theatre,” he said in a statement to Deadline. “Without a hall, we could not proceed with the show. But we are hoping to have something to disseminate by tonight – Perhaps even by what had been our original ‘curtain time’ of 8 p.m. tonight (Saturday, March 14). Obviously, if there is no live show, there is nothing to be streamed, either.”

PICARD Showrunner Michael Chabon Wants To Work On An ADAM WARLOCK Movie For Marvel Studios

Image

Picard showrunner is an accomplished writer and novelist, and he even won a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction back in 2001. With that in mind, it’s perhaps not overly surprising that the Star Trek TV series has received such a positive response, but could he be planning a move to another universe?

During a recent Instagram Q&A, Chabon was asked which superheroes he connects with after once penning a draft of Spider-Man 2, and it turns out that he’s a big fan of Adam Warlock!

“So many!” he responded. “Still holding out for that Warlock call from [Kevin Feige].”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set the stage for an appearance from Warlock somewhere down the line, but following comments from director James Gunn last year, there’s been a lot of speculation that we won’t actually see the anti-hero make any sort of appearance in Vol. 3

Believe it or not, Chabon first expressed his admiration for Warlock way back in 2012 when he talked about the character being a dream project for him. Given how well-received Picard has been, though, Marvel Studios would definitely be smart to bring Chabon into the fold for a solo outing featuring this cosmic character (a Disney+ series might not be the worst thing in the world either).

Time will tell on that front, especially as building a “Marvel Cosmic Universe” seems to be less of a priority for Marvel Studios at the moment. Do you guys think Chabon would be a good fit for an Adam Warlock movie or TV show of some sort?

AVENGERS: ENDGAME Star Ross Marquand Ponders His Marvel Cinematic Universe Future As Red Skull

Image

One of Avengers: Infinity War‘s biggest surprises came when we learned that Captain America: The First Avenger villain the Red Skull had been transported to Vormir and forced to guard the Soul Stone. He was ultimately freed by Thanos, and later by Hawkeye (albeit in a different timeline).

Now, the villain’s big screen future is uncertain, but Ross Marquand – who replaced Hugo Weaving as the character in Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame – has some ideas where he could go next.

“[Directors Anthony and Joe Russo] said once the Red Skull is released of the Soul Stone, once Thanos gets it and then once Hawkeye gets it, he’s essentially free,” Marquand explained during a recent interview. “But if we think about it, there’s all these different multiverses now. So in one multiverse, when Thanos frees him, he’s free. I would imagine the first thing he would do if he still has a vendetta, or if any part of him still has ambition, would go back to Earth.”

“Maybe he wants to enact revenge, maybe he wants to keep his diabolical plan going,” Marquand continued. “Or maybe he doesn’t care at all. I imagine when you’re graced with infinite wisdom, you’re also graced, or cursed, with infinite pain and suffering. So he’s probably, I would imagine on one level, he’s over it. He doesn’t need to conquer anybody, because he’s [unliving].”

If the Red Skull is indeed free now, then it would make sense for him to return to Earth and seek vengeance on those that wronged him. However, as Marquand would go on to point out, it’s possible that he now sees himself above such small matters, especially after gaining the wisdom of the Infinity Stones and spending so many years guarding one on Vormir.

As for whether The Walking Dead actor has been asked to return, he noted: “I haven’t, but I would jump at the chance to do it again. I think that role obviously belongs to Hugo, he is the person that originated it and I loved what he did with that. If his heart is in a different place and he no longer wants to return, I would truly again be honored to play that character again.”

With any luck, we will get to see more of this iconic villain in the MCU because there are definitely stories left to be told with him. However, now Steve Rogers is no longer around, perhaps that would be better explored in a film revolving around Captain America’s journey through time.

What do you guys think?

AMC And Regal Theaters Announce Preventative Coronavirus Measures Which May Not Bode Well For BLACK WIDOW

Image

Today, AMC Theaters became the first major theater chain in the US to announce that they will be reducing capacity in auditoriums by 50% starting tomorrow. Those measures are set to be in place until April 30th, 2020. With fewer films now in the marketplace, this isn’t expected to have an overly detrimental affect on ticket sales.

However, with Scarlet Johansson set to return as Marvel’s sultry superspy in Black Widow for preview screenings on the 30th, it’s possible Disney will start to contemplate postponing the film.

“The health and safety of our guests and theatre teams are of the utmost importance to AMC,” says Adam Aron, AMC Theatres CEO. “Therefore, AMC is proactively taking action to cut in half the number of tickets that we will make available at all our U.S. theatres. With this action, we are facilitating the ‘social distance’ between guests who still want to see movies on a big screen.”

Regal Cinemas has also reduced auditorium capacity to 50% where applicable with state mandates on social gatherings. “The health and safety of our customers and staff is very important to us,” they confirm. “We are continuing to follow and monitor official guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other public health organizations.”

Both chains are implementing extra health measures to keep theaters as germ-free as possible, but this weekend is expected to be a disappointing one in terms of box office revenue.

F9, Mulan, and A Quiet Place: Part 2 are among the upcoming films which have been delayed, and Black Widow soon following suit feels like an inevitability at this point unless things drastically change and coronavirus disappears over the next six weeks. Unfortunately, that seems unlikely.
