While the target audiences are likely somewhat different, Westworld is expected to face some heavy competition this coming Sunday with ESPN finally set to debut the first two installments in their long-awaited sports documentary The Last Dance, which will center on Michael Jordan, a.k.a. the greatest basketball player of all-time, and his legendary 1997-98 NBA Champion Chicago Bulls.

HBO has released seven new photos from the upcoming sixth episode, titled “Decoherence,” which has a synopsis that reads, “Do a lot of people tell you that you need therapy?“

As expected, the photos are understandably vague and only spotlight a handful of characters. This week, we get new shots of Maeve (Thandie Newton), “Charlotte Hale” (Tessa Thompson), Serac (Vincent Cassel), Jake (Michael Ealy) and The Man in Black (Ed Harris).

Jennifer Getzinger directed next week’s episode and also helmed the season three finale. She should be a relatively familiar name to comic book movie fans, having directed an episode of Marvel’s Daredevil, three episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and two episodes (including the series finale) of Marvel’s Agent Carter.

Marvel Studios still hasn’t given us any indication that they’ve begun to actively develop a reboot for the Fantastic Four, but a new rumor may suggest that Kevin Feige and co. have now set the wheels in motion.

On his YouTube show, John Campea said he’d heard that Joss Whedon met with Marvel Studios about bringing Marvel’s First Family into The MCU. He stresses this may simply have been a casual conversation or a brainstorming session, but there is also a possibility that Whedon is lining up the project to direct.

Whedon was said to have had a falling out of sorts with the studio after Age of Ultron, which by his own admission wasn’t a particularly pleasant experience for the filmmaker. However, both parties now seem to have put whatever differences they may have had behind them, so it’s certainly possible that Feige is again looking to his one-time go-to guy for inspiration. That said, the source is… a little shaky!

Campea has been an online presence for many years and is sure to have amassed some solid sources, but he has been known to spout nonsense in the past, so it’s probably best not to put too much stock in this until we hear more.

Another recent rumor claimed that John Krasinski has also met with Marvel about an upcoming project, which obviously led to speculation that he might be in line to play Reed Richards. The Quiet Place director did cheekily reference “playing a superhero” in a YouTube video, which has since rather ludicrously been reported as having something to do with this (the video was posted the day before the rumor hit).

Fans wondered if the recent partnership between J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and WarnerMedia would result in any DC Comics projects, and it looks like we finally have our answer.

We heard about tentative plans for movie and TV projects based around the mystical heroes and villains of Justice League Dark back in January, and now the trades have confirmed that the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director and his wife and Bad Robot partner, Katie McGrath, will head-up a JLD series for WarnerMedia’s upcoming HBO Max streaming service.

We’re not sure which characters will get the spotlight, but there was talk of a Zatanna solo movie a little over a year ago, so she’s a decent possibility. We can probably also expect the likes of John Constantine, Dead Man, Etrigan and Swamp Thing to be strong contenders.

Bad Robot will also produce a 10-episode The Shining spinoff called Overlook, which will explore the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction, and original drama Duster, which revolves around the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate who goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful.

Tributes from fans and celebs have been pouring in for veteran stage and screen actor Brian Dennehy, who passed away at the age of 81 earlier today.

A regular fixture of ’70s and ’80s cinema, the Tony and Golden Globe-winning character actor was best known for his roles in the likes of First Blood, Cocoon, FX: Murder By Illusion and Tommy Boy, but he had racked up more than 180 acting credits over the course of his lengthy career.

Dennehy died Wednesday in New Haven, Connecticut, with his wife Jennifer and son Cormac by his side.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that our father, Brian passed away last night from natural causes, not Covid-related,” his oldest daughter, actress Elizabeth Dennehy, wrote on Twitter. “Larger than life, generous to a fault, a proud and devoted father and grandfather, he will be missed by his wife Jennifer, family and many friends.”

If you’re unfamiliar with Brian Dennehy’s work, do yourself an a favor and check out some of his back catalog. He played a wide variety of memorable heroes and villains over the years, and brought gravitas to every project he was a part of.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a box office success, but after director Marc Webb went way over budget, it was still deemed a failure. As a result, Sony Pictures decided to team with Disney to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and plans for the Amazing franchise to continue ended. 

Originally, Sinister Six was going to follow the sequel, with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 following shortly after. Drew Goddard was going to direct the spinoff, and actor Dane DeHaan (who played Harry Osborn/Green Goblin) has told Collider what he knows about the now dead project.

“I think it’s pretty obvious they were all setting up for like a Sinister Six kind of situation and there was certainly talk of doing all that before all the Disney, Marvel stuff happened. But I can’t tell you I know specifically what it was gonna be. I just know that there definitely would have been a Sinister Six element to it. And, you know, at least the Goblin, if not Harry Osborn would have been involved.”

Harry Osborn was expected to be the leader of the villainous team, though the resurrected Norman was probably going to get involved as well. Team members were never confirmed, but Sandman was expected to show up, as were villains like The Vulture and Doctor Octopus, both of whom would have been enhanced with Oscorp tech rather than getting their own origin stories. 

There have been rumors that Sony still wants a Sinister Six movie, and if that is the case, we can only hope that Marvel Studios is involved in some capacity.

With movie theaters forced to close their doors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, studios have been forced to make some unexpected moves. For the most part, that’s involved early Digital releases, but major tentpoles have been postponed in the hope that they’ll soon make it to the big screen.

In the case of Trolls World Tour, Universal Pictures was planning a simultaneous release in theaters and on VOD services, but when the former closed, they continued with their plan (much to the chagrin of exhibitors who have vowed to make them pay). 

Now, things have taken an interesting turn as the animated movie – which cost $20 on-demand – is believed to have grossed $50 million during its “opening weekend.” This comes after claims from the studio that Trolls World Tour had the biggest debut weekend ever for a Digital release. 

You have to believe that other studios have taken this on board, and moving forward, it could greatly affect how movies are released, especially if theaters are set to remain closed moving forward.

Another interesting thing about this number is that the first Trolls movie earned $46.5 million at the North American box office during its opening weekend, and it’s highly unlikely the sequel would have topped that with a big screen release. Now, exhibitors are likely even more worried about the future.
